(Job #540320) Instructional Support Tech II, Makerspace Coordinator, Salary Range: $4,389 - $7,617, Hiring Range:. This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt, 12-month pay plan, permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the Engineering Department. Position Summary:

This position is responsible for managing the makerspace and providing comprehensive instructional support to the faculty and students with lab, research, and other project activities. Oversees the use of the makerspace and interacts with students and faculty to coordinate access to and safe use of the space. Is responsible for ensuring that all equipment functions smoothly, and all hazards are mitigated. This position will support School of Engineering course labs.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Instructional Support for courses with fabrication projects
  • Collaborate with engineering faculty on developing course materials and activities.
  • Design instructional modules and teach undergraduate students in a hands-on makerspace environment use and operation of equipment and tools in the makerspace.
  • Develop teaching materials on safety procedures and the use of machine shop tools including bench, layout, precision measurement, power saws, drill presses, rotary tables, indexing devices, lathe, mill cutting and hand tools
  • Assign and support student group work projects and provide an inclusive and active learning environment in a professional and productive manner, which includes:
    • Identifying the developmental needs and coaching, mentoring, or otherwise helping others to improve their knowledge or skills.
    • Scheduling events, programs, and activities, as well as the work of others.
    • Providing guidance and direction to others, including setting operational and safety standards, and monitoring performance


Coordination of the makerspace environments
  • Oversee the use and the operation of the makerspace facilities and associated equipment.
  • Design and execute a model for prioritizing and planning access to the equipment and the environment.
  • Install, maintain, and operate new technical and scientific equipment and make physical alterations to the space as needed.
  • Identify technical and scientific equipment malfunctions that require repair or replacement; order necessary parts and services to carry out these tasks; and coordinate with vendors to provide necessary repair services.
  • Track, manage and order makerspace property, consumables, PPE, etc.
  • Assist faculty and students with testing and characterization equipment to support classes and research projects as needed.
  • Clearly communicate the safe operation of technical and scientific equipment to faculty and students, including from other departments, as needed.
  • Assist in the creation, maintenance and implementation of various safety systems including new and established programs including:
  • Coordinating regular inspection and improvement of all safety systems including engineering controls, PPE and safety documentation.
  • Assisting with the coordination of safety related activities with the department chair, faculty, college staff, and other health and safety officials.
  • Data entry in safety software or other applications
  • Participate in University and College staff safety meetings and safety audits and prepare reports for the Department Chair as needed.
  • Serve as a point of contact for organization and maintenance of electronic and hardcopy safety documentation, operating procedures, and signage.
  • Lead student technicians in conducting inventories; tracking, handling, and disposing of wastes; cleaning, organization and restocking of cabinets; restocking first aid kits, maintenance of safety documents; general cleaning and organizing of the spaces; and periodic evaluation of safe working environments.
  • Provide emergency equipment or other support continuously 24-hours a day.
  • Coordinate with machinists and other technical staff working in the facility spaces.
  • Maintain currency in the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate industry-leading solutions

Knowledge of the materials and supplies related to the curriculum, their characteristics, and uses and knowledge of the principles, information, methods, and techniques related to makerspaces or similar facilities, ability to:
  • Use software including computer aided design CAD software, computer aided manufacturing CAM software, office suite software
  • Perform day-to-day administrative tasks such as maintaining information files and processing paperwork.
  • Accept criticism and deal calmly and effectively with high-stress situations.
  • Establish long-range objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them.
  • Recruit, interview, selecting, and hire, (student) employees in an organization.

And skills in:
  • Controlling operations of equipment or systems that may be found in a makerspace, which may include drill press, Welding or brazing or cutting apparatus, grinding machines, milling machines, oscilloscopes, power saws, soldering iron, three-dimensional printing machine, lathe
  • Operating equipment safely and in accordance to specifications.
  • Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
  • Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Performing fundamental shop activities which may include: Shaping metal workpieces with hammers or other small hand tools, assembling machine tools, parts, or fixtures, operating grinding equipment, repairing parts or assemblies, smoothing metal surfaces or edges, programing equipment to perform operational tasks, assembling metal or plastic parts or products, aligning parts or workpieces to ensure proper assembly, soldering parts or workpieces, cutting, manipulating and assembling products of various materials, and software usage

Minimum Qualifications:

Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned

or

Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

or

Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in engineering or related fields may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
