DESCRIPTION

The City of Long Beach, Department of Health and Human Services is recruiting for one (1) part-time, at-will, unclassified X-RAY TECHNICIANNON-CAREER position. Under general supervision of the Clinical Officer, the X-ray Technician will operate and maintain x-ray equipment, including taking of x-ray pictures, developing of x-ray pictures and proper handling of x-ray film and other materials used in the course of operation of x-ray equipment . This position is located at the TB Chest Clinic in the main health department office, 2525 Grand Ave, Long Beach CA 90815. The TB Chest Clinic is a specialty clinic serving individuals who have or are suspected of having TB disease. We also provide services to those individuals who have been identified as having close contact with someone diagnosed with TB disease.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours over 12 months and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs radiographic procedures employing the use of x-rays to produce images of various parts of the body for the diagnosis of pathological and traumatic disorders;
  • Prepares and positions patients for diagnostic x-ray films and determines exposure factors;
  • Uses appropriate protection, such as N95, to safeguard patients and staff when working with patients with active communicable diseases (e.g., TB, COVID, etc.);
  • Sets machine controls and exposes specified numbers and types of films;
  • Explains procedures to assure and comfort anxious patients;
  • Develops film by operating automatic processing equipment; maintains working areas and equipment in a clean, orderly and operable condition;
  • Maintains office records by accurately sorting, matching and filing standard and special x-ray forms and records;
  • Answers inquiries and furnishes information about procedures;
  • Posts information to various records;
  • Checks documents and records for accuracy, completeness and conformance to standard procedure; maintains adequate supply levels;
  • Reports broken or malfunctioning equipment to proper authority;
  • Compiles and prepares x-rays for reading by a radiologist;
  • Works in cooperation with a radiologist and/or other clinical team personnel; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.


REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

M INIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Graduation from high school and at least one year of study in a recognized school in x-ray technique.
  • A valid Registered Technician's Certificate issued by American Registry of X-ray Technicians. (proof required)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A valid Class C Driver License.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekend and/or holiday hours.


SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL DEMONSTRATE:
  • In-depth knowledge of current radiographic techniques and equipment.
  • Strong communication skills to compassionately and accurately explain pending procedure to the patients.
  • Ability to perform high quality radiologic exams.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to work safely with patients.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with patients and medical providers.
  • Ability to monitor patient’s well-being during exams; recognize patient discomfort or medical problems and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to respond to physician questions and needs regarding patients.
  • Ability and strength to assist patients with proper positioning.
  • Ability to participate in projects and/or meetings, as well as complete other tasks as assigned.
