THE DEPARTMENT

The mission of the Department of Public Works is “to maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure and environment for the benefit of the public.” The Department’s core services are focused on providing for and maintaining safe and efficient infrastructure for the community, providing for sustainable environmental protection including water quality and waste collection and diversion, and safely and efficiently designing, constructing, delivering, protecting and maintaining services for public facilities and public rights-of-way. The Department has six bureaus: Business Operations, Engineering, Environmental Services, Project Management, Public Service, and Transportation Project Management. The Department has over 580 budgeted positions with an annual operating budget of $250 million and an annual capital improvement program budget of $150 million. THE POSITION
The Department of Public Works is seeking two part-time Administrative Interns to support the Community Information Division of the Business Operations Bureau. The Community Information Division oversees external communication for the greater Long Beach Community regarding capital improvement projects, traffic and engineering projects, and facilitates the community input and outreach process. In addition, the division shares key information to a department of 500+ employees across six bureaus and various work functions.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The position will:
  • Assist in the support of content creation for Department's website, social media, collateral and events under the direction of Public Works staff.
  • Assist with drafting press materials including press alerts, press releases, talking points and event agendas.
  • Assist in building a master calendar for Department events and social media.
  • Assist staff in finding creative ways to communicate Department services and accomplishments to the community.
  • Assist in gathering social media insights, analyze digital and outreach data, and solicit milestone project updates from Public Works bureaus to publish on various Departments channels.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program with a major in Public Administration, Business Administration, Communications, or a related field from an accredited college or university with a GPA of 2.0 or higher (proof required) OR
  • Recently graduated from an undergraduate program (within one year of application submission) from an accredited college or university with a GPA of 2.0 or higher (proof required).
  • A valid California Class C Driver License
