General Description and Classification:

Standards Performs variety of administrative/clerical duties to support a Recreation Center. Assists with developing, planning, and promoting recreational programs to serve the surrounding community while ensuring facility is clean, well- organized, and safe for patron use. This is an experienced senior level position capable of carrying out most assignments with limited guidance or review. This level would be considered a promotional level and attainable by any incumbents in a work group who demonstrate the necessary knowledge, ability, and performance.

Supervision Received:

Works under minimal supervision; can set own work sequence and pace within process/department limitations

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists supervisor in the training and supervision of summer staff, volunteers, and participants. Also assists in securing volunteer instructors, and approves volunteer workers for special teams, classes and activities.
  • Attends community, school, church and business organization meetings, and attends school PTA meetings to speak with the players or participant teachers.
  • Prepares, submits, or files various documentation, including purchase orders, billing statements, and other material related to the operation of the recreational facilities.
  • Assists supervisor in managing the operations of the recreation center within the context of strategic goals and objectives.
  • Assists in developing and maintaining policies/regulations and ensuring compliance with all local, state and federal regulations and laws governing department activities.
  • Assists in evaluating and improving existing programs and services, and in initiating new services as required to meet customer needs.
  • Collaborates with others within department to develop and implement programs promoting the mental and physical well-being of community inhabitants.
  • Helps under-privileged participants and families find resources to help with their individual needs.
  • Assists with organizing activities such as sports, arts and crafts, music, games etc. taking into account the needs and interests of individual patrons.
  • May provide instruction or coaching as needed.
  • Provides instruction and support to program organizers, volunteers, and/or other participants. Provides tutoring and assists youth with school assignments/projects.
  • Supervises gymnasium activities, and instructs volunteers or staff on safety instruction, liabilities and the rights of the participants.
  • Sets up equipment needed for programs and takes down and stores equipment at conclusion of activity.
  • Maintains log to track athletic equipment, office supplies, computer usage, etc. and monitors usage to prevent damage or theft.
  • Enforces rules and regulations of recreation center activities to ensure health and safety of patrons.
  • Assists in promoting recreation programs by recruiting participants and distributing/displaying information as needed.
  • Plans activities for the handicapped population, the elderly, and other special populations, and helps under- privileged participants and families find resources to help with their individual needs.
  • Completes and maintains time and attendance records and greets new arrivals to activities, introduce them to other participants, explain rules and encourage participation.
  • Opens, monitors, closes and secures the recreational center after each use.
  • May transport youth from school to Recreation Center for after-school programs as needed. Decision Making Selects from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks.
  • May make purchasing decisions within department guidelines

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledgeable of all applicable laws, ordinances, policies, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of working with youth.
  • Advanced knowledge of sports, games, and other recreational activities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to instruct others.
  • Proficient skills in using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Windows.
  • Ability to provide youth leadership in group activities and interact with children.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in handling emergency situations.
  • Able to effectively interact with management, employees, members of the general public and all other groups involved in the City's recreation activities.


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

2 years' of directly related work experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Completion of technical course or associates degree in child development, human services, or related field plus 3- 5 years' of directly related work experience

Licensures and Certifications:

Valid Georgia Drivers License is required; must not have any major accidents or moving violations within the last three years.
