Job Description

Job Summary:

The Undocumented Student Success Center serves the undocumented and mixed immigration status students at CSUSB. Under general supervision from the Director, this position will implement student retention strategies and support the programming efforts of the USSC.

Advise and Coach
  • Provides advising to a wide range of students including undocumented, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), and mixed - status family students.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between program participants for all academic related matters to assist students in pursuing their educational and career goals. Duties include but are not limited to academic holds satisfactory academic progress appeals, probationary program status, completing coursework, and successful progress towards earning a college degree.
  • Advise and assist students on financial aid matters, including but not limited to, financial aid navigation, completion of California Dream Act Application (CADAA), completion of Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), securing scholarships, and internship/fellowship placements.
  • Provide resources related to basic needs, graduate school, career development, and legal services.
  • Communicate with college advisors, administration, applicable campus department, and other support personnel to ensure that academic progress is shared, accurate, and consistent for each student.
  • Encourages the intellectual and personal development of program participants by providing factual data about occupational and educational requirements related to their aptitudes, interests and abilities.
  • Maintain student records in compliance with the U.S. Department of Education Guidelines, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and institutional policies.

Programming and Outreach
  • Support coordination of Undocumented Student Success Center (USSC) weekly and signature programs. Programs will focus on academic performance, career, graduate school exploration, wellness, financial support, legal services, and university resources.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements the outreach, recruitment, identification, and verification of eligible program participants.
  • Assists the Director in analyzing, evaluating, and compiling data for collection and report development.
  • Serve as a USSC liaison to on-campus and off-campus partners and collaborators.
  • Support the coordination of the USSC resource directory initiative, including but not limited to, scholarship, mental health, and academic resource guides.
  • Provide assistance to student assistants, part time staff, volunteers, and interns in the completion of their tasks.
  • Attend appropriate conferences and/or professional development trainings as needed.
  • The incumbent will participate in the USSC Advisory Board by identifying problems, and finding appropriate recommendations.
  • Perform other classification related duties to support the operations of the USSC, as directed by USSC Director and division leadership.
  • Attends and participate in Division of Student Affairs functions as required (e.g., all DSA staff meetings).

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
  • Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
  • Advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in direct student services.
  • Demonstrated experience working with: undocumented, DACAmented and mixed immigration status students.
  • Ability to understand and communicate information related to the population being served (i.e., CADAA, Dream ACT, AB 540, DACA, etc.).

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,841 per month

Classification Salary Range: $4,841 - $6,884 per month

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Position Information:

Work status: Full-time/Exempt/Probationary

Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
