Position Summary

The International Student Advisor collaborates with the Director and is responsible for independently designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive range of services and programs to meet the University's international objectives. The advisor supports both new and continuing international students, including those sponsored by their home governments. They provide comprehensive support and advice on a wide range of topics such as visa regulations, cultural adjustment, understanding U.S. academic culture, and career development, ensuring compliance with complex regulatory requirements, and fulfilling the University's regulatory responsibilities. The advisor also serves as one of SDSU's Designated School Officials (DSOs) and Alternate Responsible Officers (ROs) for federal agencies regulating SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System), including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of State (DOS), which encompasses all U.S. embassies and consulates.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Department Summary

International Affairs provides services that meet the diverse needs of the SDSU global community and offers programs that foster global perspectives and diplomacy, intercultural awareness, and international goodwill. This unit serves as SDSU's central source of information and support services for faculty engagement, incoming students, and outgoing students on study abroad programs, and passport services. International Affairs works with all areas of the university to identify and meet the unique needs of its constituencies and to provide opportunities for all members of the campus community to develop effective skills and perspectives for global citizenship and leadership.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field; including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related. Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Key Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident to serve as DSO and ARO.
  • Two years of experience as a Designated School Official (DSO).
  • Experience in an international education setting (language school, high school, private school, community college, or university).
  • Knowledge of the unique challenges and needs of international students.
  • Ability to cultivate collaborative, professional, and friendly relationships with internal and external constituencies.
  • Ability to successfully handle cross-cultural situations with employees from other countries.
  • Previous international work experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge working in the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and experience as a Designated School Official (DSO) is preferred.
  • Experience working at an International Student Center or similar, preferably as a DSO is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,276 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,276 - $7,517 per month.
