Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Business or Public Administration, or in a field related to the job, plus one (1) year of related experience.
  • Experience can substitute for the education requirement up to the maximum of (4) years.

The office of Mayor Kirk Watson is seeking energetic applicants for the position of Policy Aide.
Job responsibilities will include:
  • Researching & developing municipal policy strategies
  • Anticipating policy needs and overseeing the design & delivery of policy content for the office’s priorities, ensuring consistency, clarity, and quality
  • Attending community and neighborhood meetings (including on evenings and weekends) as a representative of the Mayor’s office
  • Overseeing a process of internal communication, coordination, documentation, and evaluation for varied policy areas
  • Participating in coalition building strategies and maintaining key relationships with community partner organizations
  • Attending City Council meetings and other meetings as assigned
  • Assisting and responding to constituents


Successful candidates will demonstrate:
  • Functional fluency within local governmental and non-governmental institutions, including the relationships between agencies, departments, and organized interests
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key decision-makers
  • Knowledge and interest in public policy
  • Ability to exercise discretion
  • Flexibility with regard to work schedule and ability to work odd hours including late night City Council meetings and community events on weekends

Pay Range

Hours

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Advises Council Member on Public Policy Issues. Prepares, edits and summarizes reports, memos and correspondence. Monitors district and City issues and projects. Researches and analyzes policy data and information to be used in policy creation. Attends meetings, including Council meetings and work sessions. Represents City Council member at meetings. Coordinates activities or projects with other city executives, and staff members. Acts a liaison between City executives, City departments and relevant stakeholders.

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.

  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports, able to communicate in a professional manner with the public.
  • Ability to interpret policies, and guidelines as they relate to municipal government.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with city employees and the public.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in confidential matters.
