About the Position:

This is an open-continuous recruitment with the first list of candidates (eligible list) being established 6/24/2024 with interviews to follow.

The City Council has approved a 3.3% cost of living adjustment (COLA) for all eligible employees of the City of Portland for the fiscal year, effective from July 1, 2024. As a result, the salary for this position may increase due to the approved COLA

Job Appointment: Full-Time,

Work Schedule: 40 hour, Monday thru Friday day shift work week at Logistics Fire Shop. May report to various work locations.

Position Summary
As a Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic at the City of Portland Fire, no day is ever the same. These positions perform journey-level mechanical and electrical repairs & overhauls on a wide variety of vehicles/equipment supporting the Portrland Fire & Rescues apparatus fleet, suppression equipment and operations. Work varies from diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, transmissions, heating & air conditioning, to aerial lifts, boats . These positions will report in person to various work locations.

What you’ll get to do:
  • Perform repair and preventative maintenance on a variety of Fire Bureau vehicles and equipment
  • Utilize strong troubleshooting skills to Inspect, repair and/or overhaul brake systems and devices, drive trains, suspensions, exhaust and steering systems, electrical systems, air & hydraulic systems and other specialized systems
  • Utilize electronic systems to diagnose equipment; utilize a computer to search for and order parts.
  • TEST; fire pumps, aerial ladders, ground ladders, and all sub systems on fire apparatus.
  • Respond to greater alarm fires and assist with apparatus operational needs.
** This is an essential classification which is expected to report to work during inclement weather and other situations where the Mayor shuts down the city to all employees except essential.**

Portland Fire & Rescue: PF&R has 2 open positions. This list may be utilized to also fill additional vacancies.
  • These positions perform journey level work on a wide variety of specialty rescue/ emergency equipment and systems with focus being on heavy truck chassis maintenance troubleshooting and repair.
  • Applicants should be familiar with methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.
  • Prior fire apparatus repair experience, ASE certifications, or EVT certification is preferred but not required.
  • The incumbents must be available to work a rotating on-call assignment to provide 24-7 afterhours repair service to the Fire Bureau, and have the flexibility to report to work without delay in the event of an emergency.
  • Applicants that are successful and do not hold ASE, or EVT certification are strongly urged to obtain these certifications. There is a pay incentive for individuals with these certifications.
  • Ability to work independently
Current vacancies are in Portland Fire & Rescue. There may be future vacancies in the Office of Management and Finance - Fleet Division. This list may be utilized for those vacancies.

To Qualify

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
Experience with mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, air and structural systems for various vehicles and equipment. Experience and skills performing repair, tune-ups and preventative maintenance techniques on various types of vehicles and equipment.Experience troubleshooting and using computer diagnostics from original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and aftermarket providers. Ability to record maintenance records on a PC computer. Experience working constructively in a team and applying safety standards and procedures. Applicants must also possess:
  • A valid state drivers license and acceptable driving record
  • Valid CDL within 6 months of hire (City of Portland will pay for the CDL)
  • Some positions may require the ability to successfully pass an in-depth background investigation

Step 3: Establishment of Eligible List: Every Two Weeks
  • Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the equally ranked eligible list.
    • 1st Eligible List established the week of 06/24/2024
    • 2nd Eligible list established the week of 07/08/2024

Step 4: Selection (Interview): ongoing during recruitment
  • Hiring bureau will review and select candidates for an interview.
  • Please note, the selection process may take up to 90 days from the notification of being placed on the eligible list.

Step 5: Contingent Offer of Employment: TBD
Applicants who successfully pass the oral interview will receive a conditional offer for current/future vacancies which will advance you to the background investigation step.
