Essential Job Functions

A Power Equipment Technician Helper II is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential functions.

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor repair on automobile, medium/heavy-duty vehicles, and off-road construction equipment.
  • Lubricate and change oil fluids, repack wheel bearings, service automatic transmissions.
  • Repair and replace tires, balances wheels.
  • Replace hoses, belts, batteries, alternators, and light assemblies.
  • Repair/replace brakes including grinding of drums, the replacing of linings and overhauling of brake cylinders.
  • Test/diagnose vehicles, including medium/heavy-duty and off-road construction equipment with tools such as on-board and hand-held diagnostic computers or compression gauges.
  • Assist journey level technicians in the repair and services for automobile, medium/heavy-duty and off-road construction equipment.
  • Document work order comments in fleet maintenance system to illustrate the services/repairs performed.
  • Keep work order records, equipment tests/services, and related compliance records for work performed.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly work area and environment,
    Test drive vehicles and equipment.


Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Two (2) years of experience assisting in the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles. -OR-
Eighteen (18) months of experience assisting in the maintenance and repair of vehicles- AND- Completion of 600 hours of instruction in automotive repair courses in an accredited high school, college, the Armed Forces of the United States, or other recognized school will be accepted for six months of the required experience. *

PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:
Physical Class IV - Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires exceptional physical activity.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.
A valid California Class A or B Driver License may be required to perform job-related essential duties.

LICENSE INFORMATION:
Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

*Applicants who expect to qualify through the completion of 600 hours of instruction in automotive repair courses MUST attach a copy of their transcripts or certificate showing proof of the completed 600 hours of instruction to the application or within five (5) business days from filing. Applications submitted without the required transcripts or certificate will be rejected as incomplete.

This examination will consist of TWO (2) parts:

PART I : A multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted at 50%, assessing:

MULTIPLE CHOICE TESTS ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

PART II: An evaluation of training and experience, weighted 50%, assessing:

  • Professional Technical Knowledge of:
    • Repair and Modification Methods, Principles, and Techniques
    • Equipment/Tools
    • Safety
    • Federal, State and Local Automotive Standards/Regulations
Customer Service Using Technology Problem Solving Decision Making

CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE COMBINED SCORES FOR PART I AND PART II IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE FOR THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
