Job Description

Senior Planner, Current Planning Section

City of Pasadena, CA

The City of Pasadena, located in the heart of Southern California, approximately 10 miles from downtown Los Angeles, is an ethnically, economically, and culturally diverse community that blends historical charm with modern innovation. With a population of 137,000 across its 23-square-mile area, Pasadena offers a comfortable and convenient lifestyle. Excellent schools, low crime rates, and abundant green spaces make it an ideal place to call home.

The City of Pasadena seeks a Senior Planner in the Current Planning Section to advance complex, innovative land use and infrastructure projects, interpret and implement existing planning processes, staff Hearing Officer and Board of Zoning appeals, review projects for Zoning Code compliance, support city-wide Specific Plan updates and other General Plan implementation efforts, analyze complex and changing legislation, and supervise, assist, and mentor staff.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with deep knowledge of planning practices, someone who can blend their technical abilities with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and who demonstrates emotional intelligence. An individual who can work in a fast-paced environment, be nimble, adapt, and pivot when needed, navigate, problem-solve, develop and present sound recommendations, lead and inspire a team, and successfully manage projects is desirable.

A bachelor’s degree in planning, architecture, geography, public administration, or a closely related field and four years of professional journey-level planning experience, including one year of experience organizing, assigning, and controlling the work of project teams, is a typical way to obtain the required qualifications. However, any combination of education and/or experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance would qualify. As of July 1, 2024, the salary range for this position will be $117,401-$146,751 annually and will be based on qualifications and experience. In addition to the salary, the City provides a robust benefits package. This position is a member of the Pasadena Management Association bargaining unit.
