The City of Newport Beach is seeking one full-time Deputy City Attorney to join the City Attorney's Office . The successful candidate will have a firm understanding of municipal law, the prosecution of criminal matters, Public Records Act, Brown Act, conflict of interest regulations, and litigation. This candidate will also have the ability to draft agreements, ordinances, resolutions and appropriately analyze risk. The ability to make decisions, work collaboratively across departments and represent the City in the most sensitive and complex cases will be expected.

Selection Components:
  • Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review date of June 17, 2024. The position will remain open until the position is filled. The City offers an excellent benefit package and membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). The retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS and the employee is required to contribute 11.5% of their pay towards the retirement benefit.

Experience & Education and License/Certificate

A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two years of legal experience in municipal law, employment law, criminal law, land use law, and/or litigation.

Education: A Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association accredited law school.

License/Certificate : Membership in the State Bar of California.

Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.

FLSA Classification: Exempt.
