Position Information

The Brentwood Police Department is seeking highly motivated individuals who are eager to work in a city and department that prides itself on professionalism and community support. The Brentwood Police Department is a progressive agency that provides its dispatchers with the best equipment, training, and tools necessary to do the job.

Applicants who are hired will receive on-the-job training, assisted by a Dispatch Training Officer. During the training process, the Dispatcher I will learn Department policies, basic dispatching and call-taking procedures, and operation of the Computer Aided Dispatch, radio and phone systems. The training program is designed to provide the Dispatcher I with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the functions of a Dispatcher II.

Dispatcher I candidates will need to provide a typing certificate with their application and will be tested through the POST Entry Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery. If a candidate already possesses a T-Score of 50 or higher for this exam, they may submit their verification to pass our examination process.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, and

Experience:
  • One year of full time clerical experience involving heavy public contact while performing multiple tasks.

License/Certificate:
  • Successful completion of the California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course is required within 12 months of hire, and is a condition of passing probation.
  • Possession of a typing certificate verifying the ability to accurately type a minimum of 45 wpm. Please note that online typing certificates will not be accepted. *See below for locations to contact for a typing certificate.

Other Requirements:
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive law enforcement background check.


Application Process

Applicants must submit the following: City of Brentwood Employment ApplicationTyping Certificate - verifying the ability to accurately type a minimum of 45 wpm and must be from a recognized business school, an employment or temporary agency, and must be dated within the past twelve (12) months from the application filing date . No online certificates will be accepted. * See below for locations to contact for a typing certificate. Postmarks, faxes and incomplete applications will not be accepted. Your application must be filled out completely online. Resumes may also be submitted but it is not a substitute for a completed application.

The examination process will consist of: Application Review - Applications will be reviewed for minimum qualifications for the position and to ensure all materials have been submitted. If you have a POST Entry-level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery with a total T-Score of at least 50 from another agency dated within the last year you must attach the official score letter to your application.POST Entry-level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery examination - Any candidates that do not have a current T-Score will be invited to test with the City of Brentwood. If you do not currently have a T-Score and you are unable to take the exam with the City of Brentwood, you may take the Entry-level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery exam with another agency. Eligible List - All applicants that receive a passing T-Score of at least 50 will be placed on the eligible list which is good for at least 6 months and may be extended up to an additional 18 months. This eligible list will be used by the City of Brentwood to fill all current and future openings in this classification as long as the list is active.Department Interviews - Candidates on the eligible list may be selected to interview with the department leadership team and may be tested through a CritiCall exam.Captains Interviews - The best qualified candidates will be invited for a Captains interview. Polygraph Exam - Selected candidates will be invited to take a polygraph exam.Background Investigation - Selected candidates will be invited to complete comprehensive background investigation process.Police Chief - Final candidates will be invited to interview with the Police Chief.Drug Screening and Psychological Evaluation - One or more candidates may be provided a conditional offer of employment. All employment offers are contingent upon the successful completion of a drug screening and psychological evaluation
INSTRUCTIONS FOR OBTAINING A TYPING CERTIFICATE

Prior to submitting your online application to the City of Brentwood, you must successfully pass a five-minute typing test with a corrected speed of 45 net words per minute .

Typing certificates must be for typing tests given within the last 12 months . Most agencies charge a fee ranging from $10 to $25 to administer their typing test. Self-administered, computerized, online typing test results, certificates will not be accepted .
