Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent. Five (5) years experience in routing, design, and construction of an electric utility’s transmission system, or in a field related to the job.


Licenses or Certifications:
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License

This position is responsible for performing daily updates and maintenance on the digital geospatial ( GIS ) electric distribution model. The GIS model is critical to the safety posture of ESD as this model feeds ADMS for situational awareness as well as other downstream engineering systems and operational field systems.

This position:
  • Performs field verification of energized electric distribution system for quality control of GIS data being developed and content accuracy.
  • Creates red line updates in a electric distribution and network model
  • Coordinates with designers, and field personnel to ensure accurate modeling of electric utility infrastructure
  • Creates custom prints
  • Manages GPS exports or imports of Trimble GPS unit
  • Assists in Incident command during storm mode and may require storm assessment patrolling

Work Schedule:
  • This position is categorized as Essential Personnel with the City of Austin. Essential staff are required to work during emergencies or bad weather if they are scheduled to work and, in some cases, when they are not scheduled. Essential employees ensure the continuance of key operations for the City of Austin.
  • Work hours may include after hours, holidays, and weekends
  • Shifts may change according to departmental needs.
  • Employee may be required to work additional hours outside of regular work schedule.

  • This position is classified as NON - EXEMPT (Hourly).


Driving Requirement:
  • This position requires a valid Texas Class C Drivers’ License or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. City of Austin employees that promote or transfer into driving required positions must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation ( DRE ) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than eight City Driver Points ( CDP ) within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Preferred Experience:
  • Electric utility experience constructing electric distribution systems as Distribution Electrician III (Journey Level Line-worker)
  • Experience working with overhead, underground and illumination construction
  • Experience troubleshooting a distribution electric utility system
  • Experience with hazards associated with working around energized line and equipment involving high, medium and low voltage
  • Experience making red line updates in a GIS or mobile mapping system
  • Must have the ability to respond to after hour call back during system emergencies
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.


Coordinates and reviews work practices, develop designs and analyze GIS systems and makes recommendations for operations in the distribution construction process. Provides direct oversight of construction and maintenance activities performed by Austin Energy personnel and contracted staff by reviewing work requests, determining appropriate personnel to complete assigned projects and monitoring the completion and if necessary, perform work assigned. Establishes and maintains a customer perspective for all services provided to in-house clients by providing updates, reports, presentations and documentation as requested. Meets deadlines and quality expectations in a cost effective manner by monitors project budget and track expenditures, personnel and materials are available to met work orders. Alerts supervision to any deviations from the approved cost projections. Provide assistance in reviewing and updating policies and procedures of assigned area. Monitor any changes to construction or systems changes in the industry to ensure best practices are applied.
