Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Associate Director for Communications and Strategic Initiatives, the Marketing and Communications (MarCom) Specialist manages all marketing and communications activities for the Office of Housing Administration (OHA), including graphic design materials and updating content across various channels such as print, web, and social media.

The MarCom specialist leads the marketing team, which includes the marketing coordinator and digital media student assistants. They are tasked with developing metrics to assess the effectiveness of marketing and social media efforts, overseeing content production, including photography and videography, and managing digital archives.

Additionally, they are responsible for crisis communications during campus-related emergencies and serve as an EOC member, ensuring consistent messaging across all media channels. The MarCom Specialist collaborates with campus content providers to align OHA’s communications with its mission and strategic initiatives. The incumbent is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Office of Housing Administration (OHA) is a self-funded operation responsible for planning, providing, and administering housing operations, services, and facilities with over 100 employees and over 150 student assistants with an annual operating budget exceeding $136,000,000. OHA provides housing for over 8,500 students in 25 communities with over 2 million sq. ft. of residential facilities. The OHA manages the operation of residence halls, apartments, and conference and event spaces. The OHA supports the educational mission of the Residential Education Office (REO) while providing business operations for all housing-related functions in support of a quality environment to enhance the student educational experience.

Education and Experience

Knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background is normally obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.

  • Demonstrated track record of meeting deadlines and successfully managing multiple projects in a high-paced setting.
  • Flexible approach to adapting to evolving requirements, schedules, and priorities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Art, Graphic Design, or related field.
  • Proficiency in using a website management software (e.g., Omni).
  • Proficiency in using social media management software (e.g., Sprout Social).
  • Proficiency in Adobe Suite tools (e.g., InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, & Lightroom).
  • Proficiency in using digital asset management software (e.g., Canto).
  • Proficiency in using digital display management software (e.g., Carousel).
  • Competence in collaborative project management using platforms such as Canva, Google Workspace, etc.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,678 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,611 - $8,342 per month.
