Are you a master of blueprints, a wizard of regulations, and a champion of safety? We're on the hunt for a Building Plans Examiner to join our dynamic team! As a Plans Examiner, you'll dive into the intricate world of construction plans, ensuring they meet the highest standards of compliance and safety. You'll be the Sherlock Holmes of structural integrity, the Sherlock of schematics, and the guru of guidelines!

This position is part of a three level career progression of Plans Examiner I, II, and III.

Hiring Range:

Plans Examiner I: $25.50 - $29.14 hourly

Plans Examiner II: $28.00 - $32.34 hourly

Plans Examiner III: $30.50 -$35.89 hourly

Reviews building and structural plans and specifications for conformance to building codes and regulations; issues building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and cross-connection permits as required by City codes; and responds to questions from the general public and other departments concerning permit guidelines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Reviews plans for conformance to various building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, structural and zoning codes and regulations; authorize acceptance or rejection of building permit applications based on review; issue appropriate permits.
  • Reviews specifications and calculations and consult with originator when needed to clarify or make corrections as necessary.
  • Assist inspectors with analyzing plans and specifications in person or over the phone, as necessary.
  • Prepare and distribute building, landscape, site, storm and sanitary sewer plans to other departments; prepare reports and other correspondence as necessary, including year-end reports of building permits issued.
  • Maintain accurate files and records; input appropriate data into the computer.
  • Coordinate plan review meetings with other City departments.
  • Respond to questions from the general public and other departments, regarding building, plumbing, cross-section and demolition permit guidelines.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.


Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

Experience: One to three years of increasing responsibility and experience in construction or building inspection is required. Experience in reviewing electrical, structural or mechanical plans may be substituted for the above.

Education : High School Diploma or equivalent required and additional specialized training in structural, electrical, mechanical or civil engineering or a related field is preferred.

Licenses and Certificates: Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas Motor Vehicle Operator’s license. International Code Council Building Plans Examiner certification required or ability to obtain within one year of hire date.
