Job Description

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Carpenter performs the full range of skilled carpentry work including new construction, remodeling of existing spaces, and repair and maintenance work. Incumbent builds, remodels and repairs various types of facilities, buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms, sheds, scaffolds, forms, frames, fences, and other structures. Renovates existing spaces, adding or removing windows, doors, and walls; installing wall covering, ceilings and floors. Incumbent installs and repairs drywall, ceiling and floor tiles; constructs cabinets, counters, shelves, benches, partitions; installs and repairs modular furniture; installs and repairs door and window frames; hangs doors and installs windows. Installs signs, display boards, blinds, fixtures (soap and paper goods dispensers, etc.); repairs furnishings (tables, chairs, desks, lab benches, etc.).

The carpenter provides a proactive and comprehensive preventive maintenance program for the University. Participates in the efficient and successful completion of projects while respecting the learning environment and the educational mission of the university. Responds to emergencies to protect life-safety, property, the educational mission, and the reputation of San Diego State University.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), temporary position anticipated to end six months from the start date. This position is eligible for ACA (medical only) benefits. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Work hours are Monday - Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

SDSU Facilities services is a customer service-based organization providing facility maintenance activities through a transparent and deliberate process. It is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Education and Experience

Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a carpenter’s apprenticeship program.

Key Qualifications
  • Must have the ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations and to recognize, secure and report unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Must have knowledge of safe working techniques and safety equipment and must be aware of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered (biohazards, chemicals, asbestos/lead containing materials).
  • Must have ability to understand and apply university and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Two years of experience as a journey-level carpenter responsible for the planning, organizing and coordinating of assigned work orders or projects preferred.

Licenses/Certifications Required

Valid California Driver’s License.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $6,134 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,076 - $7,766 per month.
