Description

Having highly talented employees provides the best service to our community. Under close supervision, performs a variety of routine sub-professional engineering work in the office and/or field. This is a sub-professional engineering office and field work position involving the performance of a wide variety of manual tasks and routine detail work requiring a high degree of accuracy. Contact with the public requires tact and responsiveness. Assignments are accompanied by detailed oral instructions when work is other than routine. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion.
The successful performer is a well-organized, self-starter who works effectively as a member of a team. Incumbents must possess good research skills and be able to prepare quality reports and documents. The Engineering Aide is an excellent communicator who works effectively with other employees and the general public.

Currently, there is one (1) vacancy in Public Works Water Division and one (1) vacancy in Public Works Engineering Division.

In addition this classification is scheduled to receive a 3% salary increase effective 07/14/2024

Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Conducts or participates in studies and field surveys in the collection and compilation of a wide variety of data for use by engineers and inspectors.
  • Makes mathematical computations not involving the use of complex formulas. Gathers information for the preparation of construction plans and specifications.
  • Prepares and reviews simple plans, cross sections, profiles, diagrams, maps, exhibits, graphs, and charts using computer aided design (CAD) or other computer applications.
  • Compiles material and quantity lists from engineering plans.
  • Prepares and reviews construction estimates.
  • Makes traffic counts, speed checks, curb use inventories, and other traffic field surveys.
  • Performs survey office work, including researching public records.
  • Contacts the public to discuss proposed changes in parking, traffic, and other public works regulations. Staffs and provides support at the public counter.
  • Handles public inquiries in person or over the telephone.
  • Issues construction, transportation, parking, and other public works permits.
  • Issues permit parking and guest passes, manages the permit parking database, and prepares related work orders and service requests.
  • Calculates impact, permit, and plan check fees. Inputs and accesses data on the City’s property information network.
  • Reads and interprets maps and legal descriptions.
  • Prepares a variety of routine reports and correspondence.
  • Conducts field inspections and inputs, accesses, analyzes data, and generates reports.
  • Maintains integrity, accuracy, accessibility, and reliability of documents, data, information, and associated reporting.
  • Implements processes for the storage of all project documentation.
  • Supports staff document requests.
  • Assists project managers and staff with meeting organization, collection, development, and the publishing of meeting minutes.
  • Assists with gathering information to develop weekly and monthly reports.
  • Provides general administrative support.
  • Performs other functions as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent supplemented by college level coursework in algebra, geometry, or trigonometry, plus one year of engineering field or office work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities. DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of: elementary principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as applied to engineering work; work practices, methods, and nomenclatures employed in engineering and construction; CAD software.
  • Skill in: the use of computers and software, such as Microsoft computer software applications.
  • Ability to : create simple CAD drawings, exhibits, and plans; read figures and symbols quickly and accurately; perform simple engineering computations accurately; understand and follow oral and written instructions; write and print legibly; use good verbal communication skills; maintain effective relationships with City staff and the public, sometimes under difficult circumstances; work cooperatively with others.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Possession of a valid California Class “C” Driver’s license.

Oral Interview Examination (Tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, May 14, 2024) : (Weight of 100%) will evaluate the candidates' experience, training, education and abilities in relation to those factors which are essential for successful performance on the job. Candidates need a minimum passing score of 70% in order to be placed on the eligible list.

Based on the number of applications received, the Human Resources Department may waive the oral interview examination and evaluate those applicants who meet the requirements described above through an examination of record. The examination will be based on a review of the application materials submitted and will include an assessment of training, experience and performance with the City of Santa Ana. Applicants must pass this review in order to be placed on the eligible list.
