The City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of ASSISTANT ENGINEER to fill one (1) vacancy in the City Engineering Services Division of the Public Works Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to six (6) months.

The City of Riverside Public Works Department is seeking an Assistant Engineer to provide engineering services for the design of street improvement projects including street widenings, street maintenance, and storm drain improvements. This is an entry level position requiring a motivated individual to assist with the preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for the purpose of advertising projects to solicit bids from qualified construction contractors. The ideal candidate will be familiar with AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with good communication skills, willing to conduct various field evaluations, and able to complete simple to complex Civil Engineering calculations.

The Assistant Engineer performs entry level, routine, and semi-skilled municipal engineering work in the design, investigation, evaluation, and construction of public works improvement projects. Assists and supports more experienced Engineers.

Work Performed

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assist and support studies of technical, environmental, and economic feasibility, engineering field
    studies, and related pertaining to proposed and existing municipal facilities; perform general assistance
    and administrative support to communicate study findings and develop recommendations.
  • Prepare, draft, and updates contracts and specifications as needed for engineering and construction
    services.
  • Provide background information and documentation for management consideration on various projects;
    work collaboratively with other engineers and staff to perform activities and provide accurate
    information on various engineering projects.
  • Assist with resolving minor problems related to the work being performed based on established
    guidelines and principles and supervisor guidance; identify issues, determine discrepancies, and
    ensure professional resolution.
  • Support and participate in the completion of special projects requiring general engineering and
    technical ability.
  • Participate in training and professional development to ensure understanding of directives for the
    department; develop strong understanding of engineering guidelines, standard material lists, standard
    specifications, and other technical and administrative policies and procedures as applicable.
  • Research activities pertaining to public works materials and engineering practices; assist in the
    preparation of economic environmental and technical engineering analyses and project justification
    reports.
  • Gathers and Compiles background information and documentation for consideration on projects and
    technical matters; performs extensive administrative and general engineering work for the City and its
    projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil or mechanical engineering or in a closely related field.

Experience:
One year of experience in civil or mechanical engineering or a closely related field.

Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate valid Class "C" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • State of California Engineer-In-Training Certificate or Professional Engineer License is highly desired.
Highly Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience preparing plan specifications and engineer's estimates for the purpose of advertising capital improvement projects
  • Experience with a Pavement Management Program
  • AutoCad and Civil 3D design software experience
  • Vertical and horizontal street design experience
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Work is done in a standard office environment and in the field with exposure to construction materials, hazards, chemicals, and other adverse conditions. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
