JOB SUMMARY

A Police Services Specialist (PSS) is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in support of law enforcement and crime prevention functions. Duties include assisting the public by taking calls for service over the telephone and/or in person, completing all appropriate paperwork and collecting any relevant evidence, and other assignments as assigned and completing a variety of administrative tasks in support of the Police Department. Will report to a patrol supervisor. A PSS is not a peace officer as defined by Texas Local Government Code 143.003 (5) or Art 2.12 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, and as such, have no authority to detain or arrest offenders and will not have supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DECISION MAKING

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Conducts initial contact with citizens, either in person or by phone, related to calls that are not in progress, do not involve suspects who are on scene or who may return to the scene, and do not pose any known threats to any person's safety. Interviews citizens related to calls for service and thereafter documents any offenses and collects evidence including but not limited to statements, video, forensic evidence, and photographs.

2. Prepares written reports by hand and computer using proper grammar and spelling. Uses the computer to search databases and perform research.

3. Effectively manages time and prioritizes work. Handles situations appropriately through effective communication and interpersonal skills. Interacts with citizens and co-workers for input and feedback to meet departmental objectives. Follows protocol established by the Department.

4. Attends meetings and training sessions as required.

5. PSS's will not detain, arrest, or issue citations to any person. Such investigative authority lies only with police officers.

6. Performs any other non-police officer duties as assigned by their designated supervisor.

7. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Salary is dependent upon qualifications)

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma/graduate or GED
Valid Texas Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
CPR Certification within 6 months of hire.
Must be able to successfully complete required departmental training to ensure the use of computers, radios, and cameras
Ability to use word processing software and police crime software.
Must pass a background check and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) requirements.
Must speak, read, and write the English language.
Must be able to testify in court, as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

One year of public safety or customer service experience

Familiarization with emergency procedures.

Ability to interview. Effectively communicates with persons of diverse backgrounds and various conditions. Promotes a team-oriented work environment.
Extensive contact with the public; must be able to interact in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals including students, citizens, and civic groups.
Must maintain a favorable relationship with the members of the police, fire, EMS departments as well as other city employees.
Position may require working days, evenings or nights, weekends and possibly holidays.
