DEFINITION:
Performs journey-level roof installation, maintenance, and repair work.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocable to this class work under the technical direction of a Roofer Working Supervisor and are responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of roofs. Incumbents occasionally supervise sub-journey-level positions and helpers, and perform a variety of tasks that require lifting, reaching bending, working on irregular surfaces, and a high degree of attention to prevent injury to self and others.

Essential Job Functions

Performs work on commercial and residential roofing systems.

Sets up and works safely from safety harness, ladders, and scaffolding.

Removes damaged roofs and flashings.

Repairs and installs built-up roofing systems (BUR), modified bitumen roofing (MBS),
composition shingling, tile roofs, and single ply roof systems.

Performs waterproofing tasks such as applying membranes or cementing flash strips to structures and joints.

Installs roofing materials such as asphalt roll roofing, asphalt shingles, elastomeric coatings, tiles, and other roofing systems.

Performs torch down and cold process methods to various roofing systems.

Cuts roofing materials to fit on roof surfaces, structures, and penetrations.

Locates problems on roofs and determines the best repair procedures.

Disposes of wastes and debris safely.

Cleans and maintains tools, materials, and equipment.

Interprets plans, specifications, blueprints, and schematic drawings.

Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.

Supervises the work of helpers and laborers, as required.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

OPTION 1:

Completion of a recognized apprentice training program with a three-year duration in roofing installation, maintenance, and repair.*

Option 2:


Four years of experience in roofing installation, maintenance, and repair, one year of which must have been at the journey-level.**

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions. Candidates offered these positions would be required to show proof of a driver license prior to appointment.
Out-of-state applicants must have a valid license from the state in which they reside at the time of filing. Out-of-state applicants will be required to obtain a California Class C Driver License prior to appointment.

LICENSE INFORMATION: Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS THREE (3) OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST TWO YEARS WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.

PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class IV - Arduous: This class involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. It includes those positions that occasionally demand extraordinary physical activity such as those in Safety positions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
*To qualify under Option I, applicants MUST include a photocopy of their certificate of completion of a recognized apprenticeship program at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days from the date of filing your online application. Failure to provide the required documentation will result in application rejection. Apprenticeship training programs must be recognized by a national, global, or regional accrediting agency, the California State Department of Education, the California State Department of Labor-Vision of Apprenticeship Standards, or the Council for Private Post secondary, and Vocational Education.

**Journey-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be utilized as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait twelve (12) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

EXAMINATION CONTENT
This examination will consist of an oral interview covering training, experience, and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%.

CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

VETERANS CREDIT
If you served in the military and were honorably discharged, you may qualify for Veteran's Credit. To receive this credit, please include a copy of your DD214 Form issued by the branch of service with your application for review.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of promulgation. Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY IF HIRED

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (Department) has a "zero tolerance" policy for its employees for the following:
  • use of narcotics, controlled substances, and/or prescription drugs without a prescription.
Any employee found in violation of this policy will be subject to discharge.
