DEFINITION:
Renders professional medical services to patients as part of a post graduate educational program under the supervision of medical staff.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocable to this class work under general direction of medical staff and are responsible for providing medical care and treatments in a medical specialty field to a variety of patients during a period of post graduate education in a hospital approved for such training. Incumbents in this class receive varying degrees of direction by physicians and medical staff in providing medical care and treatments based on the amount of training and knowledge gained in the medical specialty. Positions in this class follow established department policy, procedures, and guidelines as determined by medical specialties and sub-specialties.

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs physician duties by providing specific medical care and treatment in a medical specialty as directed by the physician.
  • Examines, diagnoses and treats patients in admitting and treatment rooms, clinics, wards and special services.
  • Works with hospital and clinical staff regarding the care to patients.
  • Renders emergency medical care to patients.
  • Develops and documents a plan of care and treatment in a medical specialty based on patient diagnosis, history and examination.
  • Re-evaluates patients individually and as a part of a patient care team on a routine basis to note condition and progress and modify patient care plans according to patient progress.
  • Orders and prescribes specific medications and monitor for effects and adverse reactions on patients.
  • Orders and interprets findings of diagnostic studies and reports to medical staff.
  • Documents treatment on patients according to hospital and clinical policy and/or JCAHO standards.
  • Keeps patient case records current and prepares reports; fills out forms and corresponds with other parties involved in the medical care of hospital and clinical patients maintaining confidentiality according to State and Federal laws and hospital and clinical policies.
  • Provides emergency medical care to patients as directed by medical staff.


Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

LICENSE: A California State Physician's and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California. Appointees may present a letter acknowledging registration with the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California. Following appointment, appointees must present proof of having successfully passed the first State Board examination following appointment. Appointees may present a letter from the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California acknowledging application for a reciprocity certificate. Following appointment, applicants must present proof of having received a reciprocity certificate or a California State Physician's and Surgeon's Certificate.

In lieu of a license, an appointee must have:

1. Specific authorization from an approved medical school to participate in the professional activities of a department in that school

-AND-

2. Applied for and received approval from the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California to participate in a post graduate educational program where such specific authorization has been granted. If the candidate is a graduate of a foreign medical school, he must have received certification to participate in a post-graduate training program from the educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates, which is approved by the American Medical Association. A graduate of an International medical school must have received a California State Physician's and Surgeon's Certificate by the last day of their 36th month of training.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
3 - Moderate. This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working or irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Post medical school degree experience in medical practice

*License: In order to receive credit for the licensure requirements, you must include a legible copy of the licensure, letter, or authorization with your application at the time of filing or within 15 calendar days of filing.

EXAMINATION CONTENT

This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience and desirable qualifications based upon the Application and Supplemental Questionnaire information weighted 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the weighted part of this examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

AVAILABLE SHIFT
Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

The eligible register for this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the Department of Mental Health.
