The Public Health Department promotes the health of the entire community through varied programs including control of communicable diseases, coordination of the response to health emergencies, individual case management, primary prevention of disease, and wellness promotion. We are pleased to be recruiting for a part-time, temporary Health Education Specialist to support our Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health program! This is one of the most caring and engaged positions within our department. This team member works as a parent educator, supporting expecting and new families to promote optimal growth, development, and health of Nevada County’s next generation by supporting caregivers.

The Health Education Specialist will utilize the Parents As Teachers evidence-based curriculum to ensure parents are prepared to fully engage in their new roles and welcome healthy babies. This team member organizes and implements a range of health education programs including breastfeeding support, and mental health screenings with a focus on developing trusting, supportive relationships with families. The Parent Educator plans activities, performing related work as required under general supervision from the Public Health Nurse. In collaboration with public health staff, community agencies, public and private organizations, incumbents support the development, implementation, and evaluation of parenting and health education programs.

The ideal candidate will:
  • Hold the equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public health, education, behavioral or life sciences or a related field. Experience working in child development is preferred.
  • Bring value to a strong, engaged team whose mission is to optimize the health of children, prevent disease, promote and support health and wellness, and protect the community and build a strong future generation.
  • Be committed to and participate in the department’s ongoing work towards diversity, inclusion, and equity.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to adapt their communication style to meet the needs of both internal and external customers.
  • Work independently, able to prioritize work and remain flexible when priorities shift.
  • Be a detail oriented, self-starter who can apply critical thinking skills to daily work and special projects.
  • Provide excellent customer service utilizing emotional intelligence to assist customers at both ends of the life cycle.
  • Be software/system intuitive.
  • Possess strong Microsoft Office suite skills, especially Excel and Word.
This position is part-time temporary; part-time employees work an average of 20 hours but not more than 29 hours per week, for a maximum of 1000 hours per fiscal year. Temporary employees earn sick leave, but are not eligible for other vacation or holiday pay, medical, dental, or vision benefits, or CalPERS.

Sick Leave:

Temporary County employees shall accrue at the rate of one (1) hour of sick leave for each thirty (30) hours worked. Temporary County employees can accrue a maximum of 80 hours of sick leave which may be carried over from one fiscal year to the next.

Medical Benefits:

Temporary employees whose assignments average 30 hours per week or more are eligible to enroll in County-sponsored medical benefits.
