Job Description

The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is nationally recognized and registered with the United States Department of Labor. This a two-year, 4,000-hour minimum program will provide in-depth training, both on the job and in classroom, to gain experience of a qualified Equipment Operator across divisions. Apprentices will be assigned to a seasoned professional as a mentor for the duration of the program. Upon successful completion, participants will receive national certification. Apprentices will earn their Commercial Driver’s License and certifications to qualify for a career as an Equipment Operator. The candidates will be eligible for pay increases based on successful completion of requirements.

If selected as an apprentice, you will be required to sign an apprenticeship agreement and commit to the full 4,000-hour minimum program.

The starting hourly rate is $19.67 per hour.

This apprenticeship is a 24 month max, part year, 40 hour per week position with Medical coverage benefit option only.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Apprentices will learn these skills:
  • Receive training and learn proficient operation of various types of heavy equipment, including trucks and specialized machinery near pedestrians, parked vehicles, traffic, and buildings in accordance with established procedures and safety protocols.
  • Participate in training sessions, skill development programs, and on-the-job learning opportunities to enhance proficiency in equipment operation and related tasks.
  • Learn the basics of conducting routine maintenance tasks on assigned vehicles and equipment, such as inspecting, fueling, cleaning, and pre- and post-trip inspections, to ensure compliance with safety regulations and optimal functionality.
  • Training to proficiently perform basic repairs to ensure optimal performance and longevity of all equipment and machinery.
  • Maintain and submit daily paperwork in accordance with department requirements.
  • Adhere to all Division, City, State, and Federal safety regulations and guidelines while performing duties to ensure a safe working environment for oneself and others.
  • Progression in apprenticeship will include responding to emergency situations such as adverse weather events, flooding, or hazardous waste spills as directed by supervisors, demonstrating risk assessment, readiness, and flexibility in addressing unforeseen challenges.

EXPERIENCE:

Preferred Experience:
  • Some experience working with various types of heavy equipment and machinery.

Certifications:
  • Driver’s License required upon hire.
  • CDL Permit required within 2 weeks of hire.
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake & Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of hire; 3 months preferred. Training provided by the City of Loveland.
  • ATSSA Certified Flagger certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • NIMS Training.
  • Confined Space Entry certification within 1 year of hire required.

The CDL license training is subject to the condition that you must repay the City of Loveland three thousand dollars, $3,000.00 in the event you resign or you are terminated for cause within twenty-four (24) months after your starting date with the City. In such event, you irrevocably authorize repayment of the cost by set-off from any final payment of compensation or reimbursement due to you from the City. Any remaining balance shall be paid in certified funds within thirty (30) days of such resignation or termination date.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Participate in training sessions, skill development programs, and on-the-job learning opportunities.
  • Learn and adhere to all Division, City, State, and Federal safety regulations and guidelines
  • Must work safely, lead by example, and adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Good record-keeping skills are necessary as well as basic computer skills, including the ability to use project and asset management software. Training will be provided as needed.
  • Work in the field under all types of weather conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Frequent light to moderate physical effort that includes frequent standing or walking or maintaining arms and hands in the same position for repetitive tasks. Frequently works with light objects and light hand tools.
  • Frequent exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.
  • Occasional exposure to hazards that are predictable or well protected against.

Considered essential personnel required to report for duty as directed in response to community emergencies (e.g. natural disaster, fire, flood, blizzard, etc.)
