About the Position:

The Veterans Resource Center at Cal State Fullerton supports military-connected students academically, personally, and professionally. We continuously engage with our students to meet them wherever they are and to guide them along their path toward success. We believe that only through unity can we hope to meet the varied needs of our students, which is why our center is and will continue to be an inclusive space for all. We seek an exceptional individual to join our team as the Retention and Success Coordinator (Student Services Professional III). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

The Retention and Success Coordinator provides operational and administrative guidance to the Advising and Certification Team, to ensure accurate certification of coursework through the Department of Veterans Affairs, College Fee Waiver for Veteran Dependents (Cal Vet Fee Waiver) Program, and Department of Defense Tuition Assistance. Independently advises veteran and military-connected students in one on one and group settings regarding state and federal education benefits including schedule reviews, catalog requirements, and Titan Degree Audit. Acts as lead School Certifying Official and guides Certification Coordinator over the processing of state and federal military-related financial education benefits. Contributes, recommends, and implements changes to processes, policies, and procedures to better advise and serve the Veterans Resource Center (VRC) student population. Works closely with the Veterans Resource Center Director to ensure the department and the institution remain in compliance with policies set by the Department of Veterans, California State Approving Agency for Veteran Education, and the Department of Defense. Performs administrative planning for the Advising and Certification Team and uses professional judgement to analyze and improve the benefit processing systems and resources. Coordinates programmatic assessments and compiles data for institutional reporting requirements, garnering financial resources, and fostering student learning and development. Directly advises Veterans Resource Center professional staff and manages the student employment program to advance the mission and vision of the department aimed at supporting student retention and graduation. Collaborates with campus and off-campus partners to support the intersecting identities of the diverse military-connected student population. Assists with the development, coordination, support, and oversight of Titan Veteran Families, Veterans Resource Center Emergency Financial Assistance Program, Salute National Veterans Honor Society, and other Veterans Resource Center programs and services. Assists with the development of the department website, digital marketing strategy, online training materials, and digital content management system to streamline daily operations of the department. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution plus three years of professional student services work in the field. A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and the appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may be substituted for three years of the required professional experience.

Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and the overall organization.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to complete the background check satisfactorily may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Expertise with Veteran Affairs, College Fee Waiver Program (CalVet), and Department of Defense (DoD) Benefits/Programs. Expertise with Veteran Affairs Once certification system/process. In-depth knowledge of military culture, veteran experience, and military family community. Experience working directly with military-connected students.

License/Certifications

United States Department of Veterans Affairs School Certifying Official (Preferred). A Valid California Driver’s License.
