Job Description

Basic Function

Under general supervision, to perform custodial duties and to supervise other assigned custodians in keeping an assigned school building or school building area clean, safe and orderly and to do related work as required. Positions of this class are assigned to a custodian in charge of a school with more than 45,000 square feet of floor space in use by pupils and educational personnel.

Essential Functions

Working from a prepared work schedule, sweeps, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors in offices, nurses' and faculty rooms, classrooms, libraries, multi-use rooms and hallways;

Cleans and dusts walls, furniture, woodwork, hallways, chalkboards and other equipment;

Washes, scrubs and disinfects rest rooms;

Cleans windows, door glass and drinking fountains;

Cleans and polishes metal work;

Empties and cleans waste containers;

Assists cafeteria and supply personnel in lifting and storing of supplies;

Assists in moving or rearranging chairs, tables, desks, furniture and other equipment used in the course of work;

Picks up paper, secures unsafe conditions and notifies appropriate personnel, removes hazardous objects on grounds and courts of buildings;

Eliminates hazards when possible and reports unsatisfactory or dangerous situations to appropriate authority;

May water lawns and courts of building as time permits;

Assists in unloading and storing school lunches from the central kitchen;

May open and/or lock building;

Prepares all buildings for daily operations, open gates;

Performs emergency minor maintenance duties to the building, grounds, fixtures , and equipment not requiring journeyman skills;

Inspects and supervises the night custodial staff as necessary;

Performs non-technical plumbing and carpentry including graffiti removal (up to 200 square feet or to be completed in 60 minutes by painting or other techniques), maintenance not requiring power tools except small hand tools;

If needed, service and maintain heating and ventilating equipment including replacing filters:*

If needed, checks water-level gauges, drains air compressor tank monthly or as required, if needed, check oil level;

Changes combination locks on students lockers;

Repairs/replaces, door stops, window hardware (i.e., latches), adjusts overhead door closures, changes light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, faceplates and covers, and other minor hardware when trained;

Assists with glazing windows;

Cleans out gutters and downspouts at least annually and as necessary;

May assist in groundskeeping duties;

Does routine custodian duties;

May prepare work orders, maintains physical plant inventory records, equipment maintenance records, requisitions tools and supplies;

Prepare rooms for special events or meetings;

Schedules "holiday cleaning" and vacation leave with approval of immediate supervisor

Responsible for raising and lowering flag according to regulations;

Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Modern cleaning methods and equipment used in a variety of custodian work;

Fire and other safety hazards involved in the operation of school plant;

Thorough knowledge of all structures, equipment and fixtures;

Location of all utilities, shut-off valves and switches;

Cleaning materials, equipment and their function;

Able to instruct others in the operation of the plant.

Education & Experience Requirements

EDUCATIONS and/or EXPERIENCE:Two years of varied experience in manual work including janitorial and preferably some light maintenance duties.

Equivalent to completion of 12th grade or informal education sufficient to insure the ability to perform job duties.

Selection Process

The examination process for this recruitment may be comprised of one or any combination of the following: screening of the applicant's training, background, and experience; scored evaluation of responses on a supplemental application; written examination(s); qualifications appraisal oral examination; performance examination; or technical oral examination, scored on a job-related basis. Only the most highly qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the examination process. Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit as determined by these competitive examinations.

Hours, schedules, and locations for Custodian positions vary. Scheduling details for each vacancy will be disclosed at the time of selection interview invites.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The duration of the eligibility list is one (1) year unless the list is exhausted or extended by the Personnel Commission. Eligibility lists established from this recruitment will be used for full-time, part-time and limited term positions.
New employees to the district are placed on step A of the salary schedule. The maximum salary is reached after 3 ½ years of employment.

Recruitments that list Promotional and Open Competitive opportunities may result in one of the following: 1) a dual-certified eligibility list in which internal employees of the San Lorenzo Unified School District are awarded seniority points to their final passing score before placement on the eligibility list, or 2) two separate eligibility lists consisting of candidates on a promotional only list and an open list. In the latter case, candidates on the promotional list are referred to the hiring authority before candidates on the open. However, when less than three ranks exist on the promotional list, the open list will be utilized to complete a total of three ranks.
