Job Description

POSITION: Under close supervision, repairs, replaces, and maintains sidewalks, curbs gutters, storm catch basins, wheel-chair ramps, and drive aprons.

JOB TASKS:
  • Levels the top surface of freshly poured concrete on floors, walls, ceilings, or sidewalks
  • Operate a power vibrator to compress concrete
  • Apply hardening and sealing compounds to cure the surface of concrete, waterproof, damp-proofing, and restore concrete surfaces
  • Installs anchor bolts, steel plates, and other fixtures in freshly poured concrete
  • Removes deteriorated or broken concrete to prevent hazards on sidewalks, curbs, and gutters or drive aprons; and prunes roots that damage concrete;
  • Removes and replaces sprinkler systems;
  • May notify citizens of current or future concrete improvement projects;

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Knowledge of equipment used in concrete finishing and occupational hazards and safety guidelines;
  • Skilled in pouring concrete and cement finishing, following oral and written communications in English, measuring and calculating amounts of concrete needed and boundaries, and establishing and maintaining productive working relationships
  • Ability to lift heavy materials and spend extended periods bending and kneeling, work safely and wearing special equipment to protect against injury; perform duties with minimum supervision, and effectively communicate with all levels of staff and the public;
  • Proficient in using heavy equipment, power tools, and other industry-related tools to complete essential job functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is performed in an outdoor environment. Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, driving, and lifting 50 pounds. Incumbents may be exposed to extreme temperatures and weather, moving traffic, and areas under construction.

QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or equivalent, AND Two years of full-time paid experience placing and finishing concrete. Must possess at the time of application and maintain a valid California Driver’s License.

THE SELECTION PROCESS: The examination process consists of one or more of the following: (1) Training and Experience Evaluation, (2) a Written Exam, and (3) a Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a panel of subject matter experts. Candidates must receive a 70-100 to have their names on the active eligibility list for one year. The top three ranks on the Eligibility List will have their application materials forwarded to the hiring authority for a selection interview. Applicants whose experience best meets the City’s needs will be invited to participate in the examination process for this position. Candidates must have access to a computer with internet, video, and audio capabilities to participate in our examination process.
