This position is responsible for patrolling the Newport Harbor to promote boater compliance with harbor codes, regulations, and ordinances; assisting the boating public by providing general information on harbor programs and services; and assisting boaters in securing moorings, collecting fees, and answering general questions; and other duties as needed.

Selection Components:
  • Application Evaluation: Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis with the first review date of April 15, 2024, or until 150 applications are received , whichever occurs first. Candidates are required to attach a copy of a California Boater Card or equivalent to the online application. Qualified applicants will be invited to a virtual interview.
  • Virtual Interview: Virtual interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of April 22, 202 4 . Passing applicants will be invited to complete a swim test.
  • Swim Test: Tentatively scheduled for the week of May 6, 2024 . Passing applicants will be placed on an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

Experience & Education and License/Certificate

A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:
One year of heavy customer service experience working in a harbor or marine environment, including experience operating a marine vessel. Experience in compliance and/or enforcement is highly desirable.

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. College-level coursework in marine science, seamanship, or a related field is desirable.

License/Certificate: Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required. Possession of California Boater Card or equivalent. Possession of Basic First Aid, CPR, and PC 832 certifications within six months of employment.
