Job Summary

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Part-Time Public Health Nurse to join our team!

The purpose of this position is to maintain the public's health by providing health services and information by creating and giving presentations about a health-related topic, conducting assessments of the general health of the community, reaching out to local healthcare providers and facilities for their cooperation with community health events, and/or creating a plan for helping members of the community gain access to healthcare. Conduct evaluations of efforts and analyze findings. Other duties include monitoring health risks, developing intervention programs, serving as an advocate for the community, designing healthcare services, and making sure the public is aware of the services available.

Essential Job Functions

  • Participates in development, evaluation, and implementation of programs and activities for the community and population groups that promote health and wellness in the community and coordinates with local resources.

  • Assists in identifying and prioritizing health needs in the community; develops public education efforts; coordinates efforts with other agencies.

  • Developing and maintaining standard operating procedures; reviews and oversees compliance with local, state, and federal medical standards.

  • Provides clinical programming for vulnerable populations in the city by designing and implementing classes like Well Child, Low Birth Weight, Senior Care, and diabetes prevention/education.

  • Evaluating health trends and risk factors of population groups and helping to determine priorities for targeted interventions.

  • Informs and interprets state, regional, and department activities to the Director using statistical data, cost figures, and program information.

  • Responds directly to public health crises, from outbreaks of disease to natural disasters.

  • Assists in the development of public health policy.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Nursing.
  • Experience: Three (3) to five (5) years of nursing experience
  • Licenses: Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Texas required. Emergency Medical Technician license preferred.


For city employees who are regular part time (10-19 hours per week) or seasonal hired placed on City payroll, the following benefits are provided:
  • PARS - Public Agency Retirement System: the employee contributes 6.2% each paycheck to this retirement system and the city provides 1.3%. The employee does not pay into Social Security. All of the employees contributions may be withdrawn upon separating service from the city. The City's contributions will not be paid unless the employee retires under the system.
  • Part time or seasonal employees are not eligible for any paid leave or other benefits.
  • Part time or seasonal employees are limited to working only 1,000 hours per 12-month period, unless the seasonal is project based for a specific period of time which is typically less than 12-months.
