General Description and Classification Standards

Under the supervision of the Security Supervisor, the Security Officer is responsible for consistent and documented daily roving patrols, physical security inspections of facilities, providing a safe and secure environment for employees and clients in City facilities, ensuring accountability, and deterring intruders and theft.

As a member of the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Preparedness, the Security Officer (SWORN) will train and support the MOEP security team and be an integral part of investigations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned.
  • Enforces city and state law. Ensures the safety of staff, visitors, and property. Maintains security and safety for assigned areas. Maintains a working knowledge of the locations of various departments, buildings, access routes, and admission requirements.
  • Operates and monitors security control panels, alarms, and related security equipment to provide area and visitor surveillance.
  • Patrols assigned areas. Checks for suspicious occurrences and enforces City of Atlanta rules and regulations, and city and state Laws.
  • Responds to and investigates situations reported to Control Rooms. Call APD or AFRD authorities to investigate suspicious activities or security violations that require intervention.
  • Reporting and documenting all security breaches and unsafe conditions to supervisor.
  • Checks identification of persons entering City of Atlanta facilities as needed. Provide information and directions. Explains rules and regulations.
  • Maintain a guest registry as directed, ensuring that patrons have left the premises.
  • Reporting and documenting all security equipment failures and general maintenance problems to the proper authorities and supervisor.
  • Maintains logs and records of occurrences, completes necessary paperwork, and may use computer terminal to input and retrieve data.
  • Work occasionally requires giving others a general orientation to routine procedures, policies and equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Have knowledge of the City of Atlanta organizational policies and procedures.
  • Exceptional communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Regular use of machines that require little training to use.
  • Customer service-oriented to accomplish tasks such as advising, screening and referral services for callers and visitors.
  • Understand non-routine notes, written instructions, and general policy statements.
  • Computer skills in all Microsoft products.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced and demanding environment.
  • Flexibility to work all shifts, willing to assist team with overtime when needed.

Supervisory Guidelines:
  • Supervisor and staff member plan, assign and schedule work jointly.
  • Supervisor provides instruction in new situations, training, methods and procedures that are not clearly related to already existing tasks and duties.

Independent Judgment:
  • Established procedures/policies govern many work situations.
  • Regular exercise of independent judgment or initiative.
  • Recognize problems and choose solutions from among several alternatives that are not necessarily governed by established procedures.

Working Conditions:
  • Ongoing possibility of safety risks.
  • Workday occasionally includes conflicting demands, time pressures, deadlines or emergencies.
  • Work regularly requires sustained concentration.
  • Work requires some physical effort and some dexterity.
  • Must sit, stand and or walk for extended periods of time.


  • Must be a member of the Atlanta Retired Police Reserve (ARPR).
  • Meet all standards and requirements of APD.SOP.2190 (ARPR) As determined by the Staff. Inspections Unit (SIU) and the ARPR Coordinator.
  • Proof of physical and psychological fitness from a medically certified physician.
  • Have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Pass a Criminal background check.
  • Available to work different shifts.
  • Must be P.O.S. T. Certified
