The Job

Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) is recruiting for Extra-help Hospital Cooks who prepare, cook, present, and serve food to patients, staff, and visitors at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. This position is responsible for preparing regular and specialized diet food in large quantities; roasting, broiling, frying, steaming, baking, and boiling meats, fish, vegetables, and other foods; recommending new menu items and substitutions to existing menu selections; overseeing the work of other cooks and food service workers; ensuring foods are prepared, presented and served in a timely manner; and maintaining a clean, safe and sanitary work environment while following established guidelines.

This recruitment will be used to fill Extra-help positions as needed . Hours may vary for Extra-help positions depending on the needs of the department. Full-time hours are not guaranteed. These positions participate in the County's Part-time Seasonal Temporary (PST) Deferred Compensation Plan and do not earn any other benefits.

ARROWHEAD REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Located on a beautiful 70-acre campus in Colton, California (50 miles east of Los Angeles), Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) is a state-of-the-art, public/nonprofit, 456-bed, university affiliated teaching hospital licensed by the State of California Department of Public Health and accredited by The Joint Commission. The hospital houses a regional burn center serving four counties (San Bernardino, Riverside, Mono and Inyo), a comprehensive stroke center, level I trauma center and a freestanding in-patient behavioral health center. Additionally, ARMC operates five community-based, primary care clinics and over 40 specialty care outpatient services. ARMC is the primary teaching hospital for the adjacently located California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM), the Inland Empire's newest medical school.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

1) Shift Availability: ARMC is a 24 hour facility; applicants must be available to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays. Not indicating availability to work all shifts on supplemental will result in removal from the recruitment process.
2) Employment Status: These positions are extra-help, and incumbents do not attain status as regular County employees. Although these positions are of limited duration and temporary in nature, most assignments are full-time up to twelve (12) months.
3) Pre-Employment Process: Applicants selected for this position must pass a background investigation, which includes verification of employment and education.
4) Physical: This position requires lifting up to 50 lbs., standing, squatting, and reaching.

Minimum Requirements

Experience: Applicants must meet one of the four options listed below:

Option 1: Three (3) months of full-time experienceof large quantity food preparation in a hospital, school, military, correctional facility, hotel or similar large institution serving 100 persons or more at a time .

Option 2: Six (6) months of full-time food service experience at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center or any hospital environment.

Option 3: A community college Certificate in Culinary Arts.

Option 4: One (1) year of f ull-time experience as a cook in a restaurant or fast food environment.

-AND-

Certificate: Incumbents must obtain a San Bernardino County Food Handler's Certificate within two (2) weeks of hire.

Desired Qualifications

The department seeks a dependable candidate with experience leading kitchen staff in the preparation of large quantities of food in a healthcare setting. The candidate should be able to resolve problems and make decisions independently; meet deadlines; possess a working knowledge of advanced kitchen equipment and electronics; and adjust to unexpected changes in schedules, menus, and staffing in an effective, professional manner.
