General Description: • For the duration of a seven week camp, this position will monitor swimmers at indoor City pools, maintain strict observance to safety rules and procedures; preform rescues for distressed swimmers using rescue techniques and equipment; teach Learn to Swim and track progress for youth and seniors.
Supervision Received • Works under direct supervision and follows standardized procedures along with verbal and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned.
- • Rescues distressed swimmers using rescue techniques and equipment in an indoor municipal pool setting.
- • Examines injured persons and administers first aid or CPR, if necessary.
- • Contacts emergency personnel in case of serious injury.
- • Patrols or monitors assigned area of indoor pool and ensures that all safety and health rules are being followed.
- • Teach Learn to Swim for youth and seniors using approved agency modules; track progression using resources provided
- • Completes and maintains records.
- • Maintains quality of pool water by testing chemical levels.
- • Facility maintenance including but not limited to: cleaning restroom toilets, sinks, urinals, showers, floors, office areas, pool deck, entrances and walkways.
- • Warns swimmers of inclement weather, unsafe areas or safety infractions.
- • Assist with Camp Best Friends operations outside of pool as requested
- • Inspects safety equipment e.g. Life rings, extension poles, emergency stretchers or accessories, emergency medical kits, personnel lifts to ensure that all are in good working order.
- • Report deficiencies deemed unsafe for pool operations and/or that may cause harm to patrons
Decision Making • Follows standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.
Leadership Provided • May oversee less experienced lifeguards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list.
- • Knowledge of all rules, regulations and laws governing pool operations.
- • Basic knowledge of chemistry related to pool maintenance.
- • Knowledge of water sports e.g. water polo, etc.
- • Competent swimming skills, strength and stamina to perform tasks of lifeguard.
- • Skills necessary to attain a Lifeguard certification.
- • Skills necessary to attain a CPR/First Aid certification.
- • Skills necessary to attain a Water safety training.
- • Ability to provide group leader support over less experienced lifeguards.
- • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize assignments and work activities.
- • Ability to compile, prepare and maintain assortment of reports and records.
Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience- • 1-2 years of lifeguard experience or 3 summers.
- • Must pass background checks for criminal and child protective findings.
- • Must pass a drug screening.
Preferred Education & Experience- • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) with 2-3 years of lifeguard experience
- • Water Safety Instructor Certification
Licensures and CertificationsThe following certifications are required:
- • First Aid/CPR
- • Lifeguard certification
