Essential Job Functions

This position plans, organizes, supervises, and evaluates all vehicle and equipment repair maintenance tasks performed by personnel working on an assigned shift. The responsibilities of this class involve establishing priorities, controlling workflow and quality, and evaluating personnel and equipment performance.

  • Supervises the maintenance and repair of City Fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, and assigned Fleet Division employees.
  • Assists in scheduling vehicle repairs and preventative maintenance.

  • Assigns, prioritizes and inspects work performed by staff. Establishes work priorities, goals, objectives and schedules.

  • Assists Technicians in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, electrical, electronic, and hydraulic components.

  • Performs more technical and complex tasks of the work unit including inspecting equipment and recommending needed repairs and scheduling equipment/vehicle repairs.

  • Monitors and enforces occupational safety and health rules and regulation in shop areas.

  • Informs Operations Supervisor and/or Fleet Services Superintendent and operating departments of the need for major repair expenditures.

  • Assists Operations Supervisor and Fleet Services Superintendent with creation and implementation of division policies and procedures.

  • Participates in employee hiring, training, performance assessment and disciplinary activities.

  • Completes performance evaluations on subordinate employees.

  • Fills in for Fleet Services Operations Supervisor in his/her absence.

  • Assists with the coordination of fleet vehicle auction.

  • Regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.

  • All other duties as assigned by a supervisor/manager within your department/division.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Minimum of a high school Diploma, GED or equivalent.

  • Experience: Five years working with light, heavy equipment, and fleet vehicles. Five years of experience working with schematic diagrams and diagnostic equipment. Five years of experience performing diagnostic, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance on Emergency Vehicles (i.e. Fire Engines, Police Vehicles) preferred.

  • Licenses: Valid Texas class A or B commercial driver’s license must be obtained within 180 days from assignment.

  • Certifications Required: Must possess State Vehicle Inspection Certification within 30 days; must possess and maintain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Certification in either light or med/heavy duty trucks within one (1) year of employment. Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification(s) preferred.
