Job Summary

Under immediate supervision of the Associate Athletic Director, Facilities & Event Management and in consultation with the Manager of Grounds and Landscape Services, in accordance with schedules and periodic instructions, performs general grounds maintenance work and maintains the athletic fields and facilities on the CSULB campus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain Athletic fields/facilities; prepare fields/facilities for use - Perform routine dirt work at on-campus softball/baseball fields to prepare for practice, camps, games, etc., which shall include dragging non-grass areas, lining fields with required markings, raking, hand watering, watering down non-grass surface areas and putting out bases.
  • Clean and organize facilities - Perform field striping and chalking of lines on athletic facilities as needed, to given specifications.
  • Coordinate with Vendors for maintenance and/or restoration. Once a vendor has been identified coordinate work on facilities as needed.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Experienced maintenance methods, planting, trimming, as well as turf maintenance. Ability and experience in performing general labor tasks related to landscaping and grounds maintenance work. Ability to work hands on within the trade requirement.

Ability and experience in operating motor vehicles and motor driven equipment in the landscape field. Required experience and ability to operate tools and equipment specific to the landscape trade; use and care of tools and equipment. Good oral, verbal, and written interpersonal communication skills. Ability to interact positively with others at the University. Solid work history. Experience working in a university or large public institutional setting.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a high school diploma and one year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor required.

Physical Summary

Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing.

The salary range for this classification is $19.48 to $30.56 per hour.

Time Base

Hourly/intermittent on call temporary position. Temporary appointments may be cancelled at any time. Successful candidates may be appointed for a few days and up to one (1) year depending on the assignment. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
