California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at an Assistant Professor rank in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Student Population. California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona, and 41% of new students were transfers in Fall 2022. 57% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible. The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 53% Latinx, 22% Asian, 14% White, 3% Black, 2% International, 4% two or more races, 3% unknown and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. Thirty-nine percent of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

College of Science: The College’s mission is to educate, mentor, and inspire students through scientific inquiry and hands-on learning. It offers 15 undergraduate degree programs and six Master’s degrees across seven academic departments that include: Biological Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geological Sciences, Kinesiology & Health Promotion, Mathematics & Statistics, and Physics & Astronomy. Our Center for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (CEMaST) supports K-16 education locally and nationally to increase STEM success and participation for all. The College of Science has approximately 150 full-time faculty, 40 staff, and 4,500 active majors. Our commitment to the teacher-scholar model results in our college being the largest recipient of extramural grant funding on campus. Department of Mathematics and Statistics: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has over 30 full-time faculty and offers a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with two options: pure mathematics / secondary teaching and applied mathematics / statistics . We also offer a master’s program with four possible emphases: mathematics education, pure mathematics , applied mathematics , and statistics . The department currently has over 350 major students, including over 60 graduate students, and serves over 5,000 students each semester.

Position description: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor in Mathematics in the areas of algebra, number theory, or combinatorics. It is expected that the person in this position will teach mathematics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. It is expected that the new faculty member will engage in scholarly research or grant activity and serve on department, college, and university committees. They also will have the opportunity to mentor student research.
Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Our excellent benefits program includes start-up funds, a reduced teaching load during the first two years, as well as a generous retirement and pension program.
Minimum requirements include:
- A Ph.D. in Mathematics with expertise in algebra, number theory, combinatorics, or a related area from an accredited university by August 1, 2024.
- A commitment and a record of contributions to student success through applicant’s teaching, scholarship, or service. This will be described in the Student Success Statement, which must address at least two of the inclusive excellence criteria listed above.
- University teaching experience, for instance as a lead instructor, teaching assistant, or similar role.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications: - Evidence of excellence in teaching.
- Evidence of, or potential for, teaching upper division and graduate mathematics classes.
- Evidence of, or potential for, excellence in conducting scholarly research activities.
- Evidence of, or potential for, directing Master’s thesis students or mentor undergraduate student research.
- Evidence of, or potential for, contributing to department governance and service.
- Evidence of commitment to equity, inclusion, and access for all students in the mathematical community.
