DESCRIPTION: Cal Poly Humboldt and the Department of Geology invites applications for a full-time, temporary Visiting Faculty appointment for academic year 2024/2025. This position is a full-time, one (1) year appointment per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (Article 12.32). Initial appointment will be for Fall 2024. Subsequent reappointment for Spring 2025 is expected, but will be contingent upon satisfactory performance evaluation. For appointment in future terms, the faculty member must submit an application to the Temporary Faculty Pool and/or apply to other faculty vacancies at Cal Poly Humboldt, as they are available. The successful candidate will teach in the broad area of surface processes with expertise in one or more of the following areas: sedimentology, tectonics, engineering geology, hydrogeology, and field geology. Ideally, the successful candidate’s teaching and research expertise will complement our existing strengths in geomorphology, neotectonics, glacial geology, structural geology, geochronology, volcanology, and igneous petrology.

RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS: This position will be filled in the Lecturer/Visiting Faculty classification; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The salary schedule information for the Lecturer - Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:
- Lecturer A $4,530 - $6,056
- Lecturer B $5,405 - $11,994
- Lecturer C $6,190 - $13,172
- Lecturer D $7,794 - $13,797
Appointees are typically placed at the beginning of the range.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned M.A., or M.S. in Geoscience or related field and successful teaching experience, academic, or professional work related to the appropriate field is required at the time of appointment. An earned Ph.D. or equivalent in Geology/Geoscience or related field with specialization in surface processes, sedimentology, tectonics, engineering geology, or hydrogeology from an accredited college or university is preferred. Candidates with experience developing curriculum/courses/programs that inclusively serve a diverse student population and facilitate community growth are especially encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
- Interest and ability to teach Sedimentology, Geologic Field Methods, and either Engineering Geology or Hydrogeology, as well as a broad range of geology courses (lower and upper division; major and general education) such as General Geology, California Geology, and General Geomorphology;
- Commitment to collegiality and collaboration for the benefit of the department and university;
- Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
- Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse students and colleagues;

- An understanding of the dynamics of diversity in higher education and a demonstrated ability to incorporate this understanding, as appropriate, in one’s teaching, scholarship, and service;

- Demonstrated ability to advise and mentor students from minoritized groups in higher education; and
- Potential for effective teaching, or teaching experience using a variety of methodologies.
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- An earned Ph.D. or equivalent in Geology/Geoscience or related field with specialization in surface processes, sedimentology, tectonics, engineering geology, or hydrogeology from an accredited college;
- Record of quantitative, field-based, and lab-based research of processes related to surface processes, sedimentary processes, tectonics, and applied geology;
- Willingness to participate in the development of online learning experiences;
- Ability to strengthen geospatial education (e.g., GIS) and training opportunities for students;
- Development of research that incorporates aspects of Cal Poly Humboldt’s regional tectonic setting;
- Ability to develop, implement, and assess programs in ways that advance equitable and inclusive learning communities;
- Commitment to participating in professional development opportunities that build effectiveness in areas of inclusion, intercultural communication, and advancing diversity; and
- Research interest and methodologies that contribute to the understanding of diversity and equal opportunity.
Working in the state of California is a condition of employment for this position. PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members in temporary positions are teaching, maintaining office hours, and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues. Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi’ni (over in the woods).
