Job Description and Duties SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST (SPECIALIST) - FACILITIES & DEVELOPMENT / NORTHERN SERVICE CENTER The reporting location for this position is Sacramento, CA. This position will work under the direction of Environmental Program Manager I. The Senior Environmental Scientist will serve as the lead Subject Matter Expert on botanical issues as part of a multi-disciplinary team. This position will be responsible for habitat assessments, the most sensitive plant species surveys, and wetland delineations; independently completing environmental review and permitting for department projects; and providing technical and professional expertise and direction on natural resource management issues to District, Headquarters and Service Center technical staff upon request. The position will involve travel and field-based survey work around Central and Northern California. It requires a moderate level of independent action, the ability to identify and solve complex project-related issues, and the ability to make sound recommendations for project improvement. The position requires excellent plant identification skills for both native and non-native species found in Northern California, familiarity with rarity rankings and state and federal listings for sensitive plants and vegetation types, and experience with botanical field methods and protocols for surveying and monitoring plant populations. The Environmental Scientist will assist in a variety of responsible professional scientific offices and field work. Job Description and Duties FORESTRY AIDE (SEASONAL) - SIERRA DISTRICT Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKS program. Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKS recipient in the comments area on the application. Applicants must submit a verification of their CalWORKS eligibility status, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing TANF eligibility or a copy of your last aid check stub. The reporting location is one of the following: Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park, Empire Mine State Historic Park, or Plumas-Eureka State Park. Schedule is Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Multiple positions are available. The Forestry Aide works under the supervision of the Forester II and/or the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisory, with direction and guidance from crew leaders of the Fire Management Crew (FMC) and Natural Resources specialists. The Forestry Aide is a crewmember who regularly performs FMC crewmember duties. The position also provides assistance in forestry tasks such as tree marking, flagging, timber cruising, prescribed fire management, exotic plant control, hydrologic and soil disturbance monitoring, vegetation monitoring, and wildlife monitoring. This position works full time, but only on a seasonal basis approximately April - November, depending on project need and funding. During field and prescribed fire seasons, the position may work weekends, nights and overtime hours. The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment. This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. Working Conditions The Forestry Aide is a sub-professional position involved in forestry and prescribed fire work on state parks. This job includes the ability to perform a variety of manual labor work to restore and maintain natural resources, and requires working outdoors in inclement weather conditions and smoky conditions related to prescribed fire. The crew will occasionally spike camp at work sites throughout the district, and potentially throughout the state.
