Environmental Scientist - Colorado Desert DISTRICT / Natural Resources / Anza-Borrego Desert

The reporting location for this position is Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Borrego Springs, CA. This position will work under the direction of Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory).

This position is responsible for the identification, scoping, budgeting, implementation and reporting of projects to mitigate and repair cannabis cultivation impacts through remediation and restoration, and development and implementation of protective strategies within the Colorado Desert District (CDD), which includes Anza-Borrego Desert, Cuyamaca Rancho and Palomar Mountain State Parks. This Lead position is expected to work as part of the interdisciplinary Cannabis Watershed Protection Program and will also exercise a moderate level of independent action, project oversite and field crew leadership. Field portions of this position will often be located in extreme and remote portions of the Colorado Desert District and will require long hours outside in remote and extreme weather conditions. The position may be responsible for developing project goals and guidelines, written crew protocols and scheduling, leading the work of others, such as Environmental Services Interns and student assistants and acting as State Park representative.

This position is designated as not telework eligible.

Training and Development Assignments may be considered.

Working Conditions

This position will require a combination of office working conditions and remote field work. Overnight travel or site camping may be required irregularly. Office work activity is expected to be five, eight hour working days per week (up to 40 hours per week), while Field activity may require you to work longer than 8 hours per day and perform arduous field work in rugged, steep terrain above to 5000 feet elevation and may require hiking of up to 10 miles a day. Flexibility of work schedule during the week will be key for fieldwork timing and duration of some projects. Field sites may be located in extremely remote backcountry areas and weather conditions can vary in the extremes. Field locations vary but can see temperatures above 105F and below freezing annually. Field work may require the use of helicopters or other heavy machinery, 4x4 unpaved/offroad driving conditions and varied hours based on project. Overtime will be made available upon District Supervisor approval. Reporting locations will be available at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park and/or Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

Incumbents will be required to participate in a bi-annual medical surveillance program. The medical surveillance program monitors employees for potential exposure to insecticides. Not Required but beneficial: Completion of Wildland Firefighter Type II certification and OSHA HAZWOPER certification, ArcGIS software suite familiarity, Maximo Software familiarity. Candidates that believe they meet the Minimum qualifications based on a pattern of education from the classification description (specifications) must provide a copy of your degree/transcripts and/or license along with your application (STD. 678) to be considered for this position.
