The Position
Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.
Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others. This Environmental Scientist position is in the Bureau of Water Pollution Control's Permitting Branch located in Carson City. This position will help protect Nevada's water resources by ensuring that discharges to surface and groundwater meet State and Federal environmental standards. This position will play a key role in safeguarding public health and the environment through scientifically sound, regulatory-based permitting decisions. Develop permits and supporting documents for surface water and groundwater discharges. Evaluate permit and issue temporary applications and water sampling data to identify pollutants of concern and apply appropriate water quality standards. Conduct technical analyses to set enforceable effluent limits and monitoring requirements that protect water quality. This position will directly support NDEP's mission to maintain, protect, and improve the quality of Nevada's water resources for the benefit of current and future generations. Through sound science, regulatory expertise, and public service, you will help balance environmental protection with Nevada's diverse economic and community needs.

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and three years of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and five years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR one year of experience as an Environmental Scientist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Some positions may require a valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Special Requirements This position has a 25% travel requirement. Additional Position Criteria Geographical location. Show moreThe presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.
Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.
