    Head Resident I

    RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

    Assists the CRE in the responsibility of the daily operation of assigned living area(s) of over 700 students. Responds to daily requests for information and assistance from staff, residents, and other interested parties. Recommends solutions to problems and changes in program procedures to the CRE, and Director of Housing & Residential Education. Advises and supports students in a variety of personal and interpersonal concerns experienced by students in residence such as roommate mediation and personal and social adjustment issues. Establishes a positive community atmosphere in their assigned area to promote academic success, intellection and personal development of students. Promotes proactive conflict resolution among roommates and other students providing direct mediation when needed. Cultivates effective and mutually supportive working relationships with members of the campus community. Promotes Resident Advisor’s (RA) and other HRE events throughout the campus and represents HRE at University events. Serves on Division of Student Affairs (DSA) and University committees as assigned. Assists in leadership training and development of RAs, student staff, residents and volunteers to assure that HRE and University expectations for behavior and participation are clearly conveyed. Assists with the recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of the RAs. Provides day-to-day oversight of the work and development of assigned RAs. Provides for on-going review of RAs for purposes of support and ensuring effective completion of the RA Educational Program requirements and expectations through formal and informal training sessions, regular individual meetings, guidance, and assessment. Reports progress on RA effectiveness to CRE and Director of HRE, and recommends disciplinary action as needed up to and including removal from the RA program. Assists with the planning, implementation and assessment of fall and spring student staff training. Liaises with other staff, both within HRE and outside the department, to respond to student needs as appropriate. Meets with students on a regular basis to address behavioral, adjustment, roommate, and other concerns. Requests assistance and provides university conduct, counseling and health center, and other service referrals, as appropriate. Advises the RAs in the planning, implementation, execution, and assessment of co-curricular programs as outlined in the HRE educational event planning model and consistent with University and DSA mission and strategy. Supports broad student engagement across a variety of academic, curricular, and co-curricular programs through support and promotion of campus events throughout their assigned living area. Reviews incident reports and assists a CRE and the Director with timely and appropriate resolution of conduct issues. Works within the guidelines of the HRE and University conduct processes with an emphasis on educational and developmental outcomes. Meets with students to discuss violations and assign sanctions when appropriate for minor and intermediate-level violations. Interprets and explains HRE standards, expectations, procedures, and the developmental/educational goals of the conduct process to RAs and residents. Effectively documents meeting invitations and outcomes using Maxient (the University conduct information system) or other modes as appropriate. Provides reports to the Director of HRE, the Director of Housing Services & Operations, the Assoc. Vice President for Student Life & Support Programs and Dean of Students and the Vice President of Student Affairs (VPSA). Under the direction of a CRE or the Director of HRE, advises a special assignment(s) that may include one or more of the following areas: Academic Support Resources, Residence Hall Association (RHA), National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), Admitted Dolphin Day Program, Assessment, RA recruitment, and/or RA Training (additional special assignment areas may be developed and assigned). Special assignment area includes the planning and implementation of related events, encouraging student involvement and engagement, and collaboration with campus partners to support a seamless learning environment. Assumes day, evening, holiday, and weekend on-call responsibilities in rotation with other HRE staff. Provides assistance on an as-needed basis to the Lead Coordinator of Conference Services & Marketing Initiatives when HRE hosts conference guests during summer months. Summer Conference assistance includes customer service, emergency response, and on-call duty support for conference clients. Provides day, evening, and weekend on-call responsibilities in rotation with other HRE staff. On-call services include crisis and emergency response, facility maintenance, direction and support for the RAs, and conflict resolution for all members of the residential community. Schedule requires significant flexibility to include evening, weekend, and holiday hours as scheduled and/or as needed to respond to urgent issues. Works closely with University Police in the immediate response and resolution of student conduct or health concerns. Following responsive interventions, the ACRE produces incident reports, provides direction to RAs and student staff, and provides appropriate conduct, counseling, Title IX/DHR, and health center referrals. Participates in on-going professional development and attends all staff trainings and meetings. Maintains confidentiality of student information at all times in accordance with FERPA requirements and established procedures. Maintains confidentiality of personnel information. Performs additional related duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:

    Education: Preferred qualifications include bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

    Experience: At least one year of experience as a professional or paraprofessional within housing or related area is required. One or more years of full-time experience as entry-level live-in housing professional, and/or two or more years as a resident assistant, graduate assistant, or paraprofessional staff member in a university housing program.

    Other Knowledge/Skills: Must possess the following knowledge and abilities: The personal and social problems typically encountered by present-day college students and the ability to respond to them; working knowledge of group dynamics and needs; current issues and trends in higher education; an understanding of student, staff and leadership development; working knowledge of management techniques, personnel practices, and inventory control; ability to select, train, supervise, and evaluate students; ability to analyze emergency situations accurately and take prompt action; ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications for broader HRE, DSA, and/or University goals; solid administrative and organizational skills such as keeping simple records and accounts (including the ability to effectively utilize computer hardware and software tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook); effective interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, staff, students, and others; the ability to work effectively with a population of diverse constituencies in a complex and dynamic environment; the ability to make reasoned and balanced decisions according to established guidelines in moderately complex situations and make referrals or seek counsel when needed; the ability to acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation and functions of HRE. Must have thorough knowledge of and proficiency in English grammar, spelling and punctuation; as well as effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to provide presentations. Must be able to work a variable schedule as needed, including evenings, weekends and some holidays. Must live on campus in University-provided accommodations so that emergency response requirements can be effectively and promptly fulfilled.

    A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU.     The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

    The person holding this position is considered a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Campus Security Act and must provide reports regarding Clery crimes about which they become aware to the designated campus authority.

    Hiring Salary: $3,680 per month
