DescriptionTHE POSITION:Are you a civil or environmental engineering student looking to gain real-world experience in Public Works Engineering? The City of Tustin’s Public Works Department is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and eager-to-learn individual to join our Engineering Division as an Engineering Intern! This year-round internship is an excellent opportunity to contribute to public infrastructure projects from conception to completion and gain hands-on experience in the field. Under direct supervision, the Engineering Intern will perform a variety of entry-level engineering tasks to support the design and construction phase of projects.
The Engineering Intern position is a training classification specifically designed to provide on-the-job training and experience to
current students in pursuit of a degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering . To be considered, applicants are
required to submit either a web-generated unofficial transcript or a scanned copy of an official transcript.
Given that this is a part-time, at-will, non-benefitted position, hours will be limited to less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year. Hours worked may vary significantly from week to week.

THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:The Public Works Department is responsible for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of all public infrastructure and public right-of-way. THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS:Application materials will be carefully reviewed to identify candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the position. Those who are best qualified will be invited to participate in a panel interview. Those who pass the panel interview will earn placement on the eligible list, which may be used for current and future vacancies in the job classification.
This recruitment is conducted on a continuous basis to meet the needs of the City as vacancies occur and may close at any time.
Examples of DutiesAs a part-time Engineering Intern, incumbents will perform a wide variety of duties. Examples of these duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist with data research, including streets, storm drains, sewers, water systems, and park improvements.
- Assist customers at the permit counter as needed; assist in calculating plan check and development fees; manage the encroachment permit process governing all use of the public right-of-way; and monitor status of plan check review packages.
- Perform field inspections and surveys.
- Conduct research, collect data and perform engineering calculations.
- Prepare maps using the City's Geographic Information System.
- Assist in the preparation of engineering drawings and estimates.
- Assist with the construction management of projects under the City’s capital improvement program.
- Assist in the preparation and distribution of reports and other documents.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Minimum QualificationsEDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:Graduation from high school and current enrollment in an accredited college or university in pursuit of an associate's or bachelor's degree with a major course of study in Civil and/or Environmental Engineering.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Satisfactory results from a criminal history review, physical examination and administrative screening.

WORK ENVIRONMENT The employee typically works in office conditions; the noise level is frequently quiet or moderately quiet, at or below 85 decibels. The employee is occasionally exposed to loud construction noise above 85 decibels level when working in the field.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION In lieu of Social Security, e mployees are required to contribute 5.5% of salary on a pre-tax basis every pay period to an OBRA 457 deferred compensation plan. The City contributes an additional 2%, for a total combined contribution of 7.5%.
