About the DepartmentThe City of San José, the Capital of Silicon Valley, is one of the nation's best managed cities and one of the top ten cities in which to live, work, and do business. Moreover, San José is the center of cultural, government and economic activity for the region. The employees of the City of San José have embraced the following values: Integrity, Innovation, Excellence, Collaboration, Respect and Celebration.
Position DutiesThe City of San José has a number of short-term, temporary, and part-time assignments available throughout the year. With state and federal grants, the City often has one-time temporary funding, which can make it challenging to hire staff who are looking for permanent positions. However, some of these opportunities may be perfect for a City Retiree who is looking for a shorter-term or part-time assignment. Additionally, departments may need help when a staff member is out on leave or for other reasons.
If you are a Retiree and are interested in learning about these opportunities, please provide some information about your prior work with the City, your background, and your interests. This information will be used to develop an interest list. If a position becomes available that matches your skills and interests, you may be notified.
Note: Retired City employees are eligible for rehire under the Reemployment of Retirees Policy, set forth in
City Administrative Policy Manual Section 3.1.5, thirty (30) days after the effective date of their service retirement.
Individuals must be retired for more than 30 calendar days before expressing interest in returning to the City as a rehired retiree. Please do not submit an application unless you have been retired for more than 30 days .
Pursuant to the Policy, Retirees are limited to working a total of 960 hours per year, and may only be paid an hourly wage, not benefits or other compensation. They may not accrue additional service credit upon rehire. Rehired retirees are not eligible to make contributions to or receive distributions from the City’s 457 plans. If a retiree had previously set up monthly distributions from their 457 account, those will be suspended upon rehire.
