    Position Information

    The City of Brentwood is now accepting applications for Technical Assistant I. This city-wide classification performs a variety of specialized clerical, technical, and administrative duties to support their division while serving as a point of contact and resource for other City staff, the general public, and outside agencies and organizations. The City currently has one vacancy in Engineering, but this recruitment may be used to fill all upcoming vacancies in multiple City departments as long as the eligible list is active.

    The Technical Assistant I is a key position in the Engineering Department. This position is responsible processing/tracking staff reports, monitoring project contracts, processing progress payments, department budgeting, processing permits, plan tracking/routing and performs many other daily operational duties in Engineering such as general support to all Engineering staff; front counter coverage, phone calls, emails, processing payroll, cash handling, records management including review and cleanup of record plans.

    The ideal candidate would possess the following traits:
    • Excellent verbal and written communication to assist internal and external customers by phone, in person and electronically
    • Accuracy, consistency and attention to detail is required
    • Technical aptitude; ability to read maps and plans; process plan routing and permits
    • Strong desire to learn about the various aspects of the City’s Engineering Department
    • Intermediate computer, typing and software skills in Adobe Acrobat and standard Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Word and Excel
    • Ability to comprehend public agency rules, regulations, policies, procedures and Municipal Code and accurately interpret and relay applicable information to the general public in an easy-to-understand manner
    • Exercise initiative and sound judgment in solving administrative and technical problems within established procedural guidelines.
    • Ability to work equally well independently and in team settings
    • Work under steady pressure with frequent interruptions and a high degree of public contact by phone or in person.
    Desirable experience:
    • Knowledge of records management
    • Preparation and monitoring of operating budgets; processing invoices and preparing purchasing requisitions
    • Issuance of Permits
    • Familiarity with specialized software programs: CDS (permitting software); Bluebeam, Laserfiche; OneSolution (financial software); ArcGIS; Microsoft Visio and OneNote

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Education/Training:
    Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

    Experience:
    One year of clerical experience preferably involving extensive public contact.

    License or Certificate:
    Possession of an appropriate driver's license may be required.

    Application Process

    The examination process will consist of:
    • Review of applications for minimum qualifications for the position and to ensure all materials have been submitted.
    • Written Exam - Applicants possessing these requirements will be invited to take the written test. The examination will cover elements of the knowledge and abilities identified in the job description and is tentatively scheduled for the week of November 4, 2024.
    All applicants that pass the written test will be placed on the eligible list which is good for at least 6 months and may be extended up to an additional 18 months. This eligible list will be used by the City of Brentwood to fill all current and future openings in this classification as long as the list is active.
