Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings to supportive housing.

    MISSION:

    DEFINITION:
    Supervises the Ambulance Dispatchers in the Centralized Dispatch Unit of Patient Transportation Services.

    Essential Job Functions

    Supervises Ambulance Dispatchers and related personnel who are involved in arranging emergency and scheduled transportation for patients to and from County and non-County hospitals and institutions.

    Prepares daily work schedule of Ambulance Dispatchers.

    Recommends purchase of new equipment or modification of existing equipment and orders supplies.

    Operates radio equipment to maintain communication with ambulance and EMS Agency personnel.

    Performs and corrects data entry, prepares various reports, and utilizes computer equipment.

    Maintains records of patient transportation requests.

    In the event of a major emergency or disaster, participates as a member of the Departmental Operations Center, as needed.

    Performs duties of Ambulance Dispatcher on an emergency relief basis.

    Requirements

    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

    Option I:
    One (1) year of experience at the level of Ambulance Dispatcher dispatching ambulances to and from a large number of locations throughout Los Angeles County and surrounding counties. Experience at the level of Ambulance Dispatcher is defined as: Dispatches ambulances, vans and other vehicles to transport patients to and from County and non-County hospitals and institutions.

    Option II:
    Two (2) years of experience as an Ambulance Medical Technician.

    To qualify under Option II, applicants must have County status as an Ambulance Medical Technician as evidenced by holding or having held such payroll title for the required time.

    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
    Credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:
    Experience working with Computer Aided Dispatch software.
    Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certificate*.
    Any additional experience in excess of the Selection Requirements.

    * Certification/License Information: Please ensure the Certification/License Section of the application is completed. Provide the title of the certificate, the number, date issued, date of expiration and the name of the issuing agency. Please attach a legible photocopy of the required certificate to your application at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days of filing online or your application will be rejected. We do not accept password-protected documents. Ensure documents are unlocked before attaching to your application or sending to the exam analyst.

    IMPORTANT NOTICE: Prime Variance Reports (PVRs), also known as Master Time Records, are not accepted, or required as part of the application process; this includes the selection interview and the background-check.

    Additional Information

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:
    This examination will consist of an evaluation of training, experience and desirable qualifications based on application information and supplemental questionnaire weighted at 100%.

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or above on the examination in order to be added to the eligible register.

    Los Angeles County will not consider claims of not viewing or receiving notification to be a valid reason for late test administration or rescheduling of a test component.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

    Applications will be processed on an "as received" basis, and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligibility register accordingly.

    The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

    VACANCY INFORMATION:
    The resulting eligible register from this examination will be used to fill vacancies throughout the Department of Health Services, as they occur.

    SPECIAL INFORMATION:
    Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
