Job Summary Assigned primarily to the Main Campus and reporting to the Grounds, Landscape & Recycling Manager while under lead work direction provided by the Lead Groundsworker, the Groundsworker is a member of a team responsible for maintaining landscape and grounds areas of the campus as well as supporting recycling operations. This position is assigned to an area of campus and is responsible to maintain all areas of the grounds and landscape including lawns, groundcover, plants, hedges, shrubs, and trees. This includes work efforts associated with planting, cultivating, fertilizing, trimming, raking, mowing, weeding, and irrigating grounds areas and keeping the campus free and clear of debris and collecting trash and recyclables. This position operates small equipment and machinery typical to a landscape, hardscape, and grounds environment and may perform duties associated with and assisting qualified personnel in irrigation system repair, spraying, tree trimming, and nursery functions. This position is a part of the Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations, which provides services to a University campus spread across five sites comprised of 167 acres, 85 buildings, and more than six million gross square feet. Maintenance & Operations employs approximately 235 full time permanent staff and up to an additional nine part time, seasonal, or contract staff. The assigned operating budget for the unit is +$20 million for annual routine maintenance and operation activities. For more information, visit our website at at www.familycampatyosemite.com Position Duties The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is currently seeking to fill one (1) Full-Time Senior Maintenance Worker vacancy in the Parks division at Family Camp in Yosemite. The incumbent will be expected to live onsite or within one hour of Family Camp during the months of March through October as well as be readily available to make bi-monthly (twice a month) visits and repairs to Camp through the winter months of November through February (this includes during times of inclement weather). The incumbent will be expected to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays. Approved time-off will be limited during the regular camp operating season (May through September). Senior Maintenance Workers perform under direction, plans, schedules, assigns, and reviews the work of large and small crews engaged in semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, parks, landscaping, and public facilities. Directs and participates in training and developing employee skills and assists in evaluating assigned crews. Directs and participates in inventory and control of supplies, spare parts, and equipment for use in work areas. Performs related work as required. Positions with the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department are responsible for: Supervises, provides lead direction, and participates in the repair, maintenance, and reconstruction of streets, roadways, storm and sanitary mains, laterals and inlets, water lines, and storm and sanitary sewers. Directs and participates in training and developing employee skills and assists in evaluating assigned crews. Plans, schedules, and assigns work based on work requests and the results of facility or field inspections, and requisitions materials for work completion. Creates, distributes, assigns, and assures completion on work orders and time on jobs; tracks daily activities and enters data into automated system. Directs and participates in inventory and control of supplies, spare parts, and equipment for use in work area. Creates a traffic control plan for each new traffic control setup; trains staff in tasks related to setting up and monitoring traffic control for optimum safety for motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists and crew members. Supervises, provides lead direction, and participates in the accomplishment of projects in parks and recreation areas such as the construction of chain link fencing, fire breaks, steps and footbridges, landscaping, and seeding and planting areas; participates in the repair, maintenance, and reconstruction of parks, playgrounds, sport fields, and trails. Supervises and provides lead direction to staff in the operation and utilization of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in the performance of assigned work, including the use of safety devices and safe working practices. Completes work order forms, daily activity logs, timecards, requisitions, vandalism reports, water use records, purchase orders, and supply records; conducts and documents crash, injury and near miss investigations. Supervises, provides lead direction, and participates in painting traffic directional signs or symbols such as crosswalks, safety loading zones, bus stops, parking and center lines, barricades, and guard rails. Directs and participates in operation and maintenance of irrigation systems on streets and road right-of-way, including median islands, backup properties, walkways, underpasses, overpasses, grounds and turf areas, and park areas. Conducts safety meetings; performs periodic safety inspections on vehicles and crews. Implements and maintains preventative maintenance schedules. Provides bids for repairs, renovations, and new installations of parks, sports fields, community centers and library landscapes. May supervise and provide lead direction in weed abatement. The salary range for this classification is $89,731.20 - $109,158.40. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate’s qualifications and experience. Minimum Qualifications Education : Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate) Experience : Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, parks, street landscaping, or public facilities, including at least one (1) year experience providing lead direction to a crew engaged in semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and repair of parks, facilities, and infrastructure; groundskeeping; or landscaping. Acceptable Substitution : Cumulative experience from a lower class to lead capacity at a level such as Maintenance Worker II, Gardener, Parks Maintenance Repair Worker II, Facility Worker I, or Athletic Stadium Groundskeeper with the City of San Jose may be substituted on a year-for-year basis (2080 hours = 1 year). Licenses or Certificates : As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required.
