Job Description

Summary of Work

This position provides general administrative and secretarial support to attorneys with the following duties:
  1. Editing and formatting letters, settlement agreements, memos, and legal opinions.
  2. Maintaining case files, creating forms, making travel arrangements, and setting up meetings.
  3. Serves as a point of contact for the General Counsel Division when issuing Attorney General’s opinions, Administrative Rules opinions, and responding to open records requests.
  4. Electronically file legal documents with the proper court.
  5. During legislative session this position will assist, where necessary, in tracking bills, formatting amendments, and filing testimony with Legislative Council.
  6. Assists the front desk receptionist as a back-up, when needed.

In addition to the monthly salary, this position includes fully paid health insurance for employee and family, the option to participate in employee-paid dental and vision for employee and family, participation in the state NDPERS defined benefit retirement plan as well as the option to participate in the 457 deferred compensation plan, the option to contribute to a medical spending account, and earning annual and sick leave.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Associate degree with major coursework in office support, legal, business, or office education and four years of work experience performing a variety of high-level complex office support, clerical or secretarial work that includes lead work or office coordination responsibilities. (Note: The hiring authority will consider substituting additional work experience for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis if the experience provides the knowledge and skills required to perform the duties of this position.)
  2. Work experience in a legal setting is preferred.
  3. Ability to use and understand a personal computer, with knowledge and use of Windows, and experience in word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience performing legal office support and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  4. Proficiency in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and formatting skills.
  5. Excellent prioritization, time management, organizational, multi-tasking, accuracy, and attention to detail skills.
  6. Demonstrated ability to communicate tactfully and with emphasis on customer service.
  7. Ability to establish and maintain effective, harmonious working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
  8. Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  9. Display strong interpersonal skills in dealing with customers and co-workers; utilize appropriate telephone etiquette; demonstrate appropriate written and verbal communication skills; demonstrate ability to perform standard office tasks and operate standard office equipment such as telephone, computer, printers, scanner, photocopier, and fax machines.
