Wake County Public Libraries is seeking an Adult Fiction and Young Adult Materials Selector/Librarian!

What You'll Be Doing

Librarian Selectors work under the general direction of the Selection Manager to develop and maintain a popular, representative collection of over 1.7 million items. Each Selector works in a defined audience and subject area (Adult Fiction and Young Adult, Adult Nonfiction, Young Child and School Age - Fiction and Nonfiction). Selectors work within the guidance of our Collection Development Policy and an Annual Purchase Plan with a materials budget of approximately $4 million to select roughly 200,000 print books and over 25,000 digital books each year. In addition to ongoing book selection, this position works on selecting items for Opening Day collections for new and expanded library facilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Identify and select new print and Audio CD titles from reviews in professional journals; leads from publishers, vendors, news organizations, staff and customer requests
  • Identify and select retrospective and replacement titles using various (or "multiple") collection relevancy reports
  • Identify and select eContent (downloadable eBooks and eAudio) from reviews in professional journals; leads from publishers, vendors, news organizations, staff, and customer requests
  • Manage the creation of purchase orders in the ILS (catalog) for selected titles and monitor the progress through physical receipt of item, as well as manage the creation of catalog records to reflect local practices and standards
  • Communicate with Selection Manager and vendor representatives to address issues with print or digital items ordered.
  • Identify and select Opening Day Collections for new and expanded facilities, ranging from 45,000-125,000 volumes per project
  • Participate in a variety of projects to support programs and services for WCPL
The Selection Team works from the Olivia Raney Local History Library, located next to Library Administration on Carya Dr. in Raleigh. The campus sits next to the beautiful grounds of Historic Oak View County Park.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Master's degree in Librarianship or related field: MLS, MLIS, MIS, ML from an ALA accredited program or NC program
  • No specific experience required
  • Equivalent education and experience are NOT accepted
  • Please include ALL prior work experience on your application and resume.


Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Working knowledge of Spanish
  • Three years of experience selecting materials in a public library
