This position is within the Missouri Department of Natural Resources/Geological Survey Survey/Land Reclamation Program/Industrial and Metallic Minerals Mining Unit and is located in Lewis and Clark State Office Building, 1101 Riverside Drive, Jefferson City, Missouri 65101. Typical work shift details are weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m; with some flexibility.

Join a team of fully engaged professionals to fulfill our mission to assure beneficial reclamation of mined lands and to protect public health, safety, and the environment from the adverse effects of mining within the state of Missouri. This program supports unique professional development training opportunities, which will involve both in-state and out-of-state travel for this position. The selected candidate will be fully trained and be familiar with our processes, before being allowed to conduct our state business on his or her own.   • The core responsibility of this position is to inspect industrial and metallic mineral mine sites for compliance with laws, regulations, and policies or for concerns. Process mining permit applications and bond release applications. Be involved with public meetings, present to the Missouri Mining Commission bond releases, and other topics. Be responsible for learning and maintaining our current filing practices. This is a full-time job with a heavy workload.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge and implement all applicable state regulatory requirements, policies, and procedures pertaining to the Industrial and Metallic Minerals Mining Unit.
  • Effectively communicate with mine operators, public, and others about mine permitting processes, assist with map making, learn and help operators navigate our electronic permitting process known as Land Reclamation Information System.
  • Overnight travel is required to conduct inspections and training.
  • Coordinate with other agencies such as Missouri Department of Conservation involving in-stream mine sites heritage reviews and variance requests and US Army Corps of Engineers on similar topics.
  • Complete and carry out other assignments made by program director and/or unit chief.


  • Four-year Bachelor of Science Degree in agriculture, environmental, ecology, or biological sciences.
  • Communicate clearly, both verbally, and in writing.
  • Traverse rough terrain on foot.
  • Operate a four-wheel drive vehicle over rough terrain and on public roads. A valid Missouri driver’s license is required.
  • Learn and utilize complex technical laws, regulations, and regulatory procedures.


To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

  • Knowledge of soil science, establishing post mining land uses, and mining in general.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS and computer-based programs is beneficial.
