ABOUT THE JOB:
Deschutes County is accepting applications for an Animal Control Technician for the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office. This position provides service to the community by enforcing animal control laws and ordinances pertaining to animals and protection of livestock, delivery of civil process documents and conducting routine investigative reports. Position is uniformed and less lethal duty equipment is required. Animal Control Technicians are enforcement officers as defined in ORS 153.005.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Investigates complaints about the treatment of animals, violations of animal control laws, sightings of animals posing a risk or threat to other animals, property, and the community.
  • Issues citations for violations.
  • Seeks and delivers civil process documents to the appropriate individuals.
  • Receives and records pertinent information for minor animal investigative reports from the public.
  • Aids in assisting law enforcement with minor calls.
  • Ability to be a credible witness in a court of law.
What You Will Bring:
Knowledge of or experience with:
  • Techniques for dealing with the public, in person and over the telephone to resolve conflict.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar and composition, formats, spelling, and arithmetic.
  • Principles and practices of general office administration, case management, computer systems and applications.
Skill in:
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers, citizens, developers, advocates, and regional agencies.
  • Provide and compile complete and accurate information.
  • Working well under pressure or in stressful situations firmly, tactfully and with respect to individual rights; often with limited supervision.

Compensation

$4,610.80 to $6,179.91 per month for a 173.33 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.

Must be able to work any combination of 8, 10 or 12 hour rotating shifts; including nights, weekends and holidays. Incumbent must be willing to work a flexible schedule when needed, to meet the needs of the Sheriff’s Office. Work is performed in the field and office setting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology or related field.
  • Experience working in the public sector or in a customer service capacity.
  • LEDS Certification.


Necessary Special Requirements

Driving is a requirement for this position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.

  • Must successfully pass field training as relevant to assigned duties.
  • Must pass a pre-qualifying driving record review and criminal history background.
  • A current driver's license and the state of origin are required. Candidates who wish to be considered for this position must include an accurate driver's license number and state of origin on their application under the Personal Information section .
  • Background Investigation: A complete and full background investigation will be completed prior to a candidate receiving a conditional job offer.
