The Department:

The Santa Clara Library Department aims to unite our community through possibility, exploration, and education. Read Santa Clara’s adult literacy program serves adults who seek to strengthen their basic literacy skills to achieve their goals as family members, workers, community members and lifelong learners.

The Position:

The Literacy Technology Assistant helps Read Santa Clara's adult learners gain basic digital literacy skills. The person helps adult learners 1:1 or in small groups learn how to use the literacy program's laptops and iPads as well as how to use literacy software on their own devices. The Literacy Technology Assistant may also be called on to support volunteer tutors or Read Santa Clara staff, as the need arises. The Literacy Technology Assistant is a patient, empathetic individual, who can teach basic technology skills to adults who have little or no digital literacy skills.

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Typical Duties

  • Configure and operate Read Santa Clara's devices.
  • Maintain the technology inventory, including keeping track of software subscriptions and licenses.
  • Meet one-on-one with adult learners who need help with technology.
  • Plan and conduct small group classes for learners on basic technology skills and literacy software.
  • Check in and check out RSC devices to adult learners.
  • Advise volunteers on how to effectively incorporate technology in literacy instruction and assist them as-needed with the online platform used to turn in monthly tutoring reports
  • Write user-friendly instructions/create tutorial videos to help adult learners/tutors use literacy software.
  • Record data and provide reports of sessions held with learners and tutors.
  • Support Read Santa Clara staff, as needed, on specific literacy projects.


Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education Requirements:

High School diploma, GED or college degree.

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience teaching adult learners or teaching basic technology skills to adults.

Other Requirements:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be available to work up to 20 hours a week, including some weekdays, evenings and weekends.
  • May be required to go to different library branches or community sites within the City of Santa Clara to serve adult learners


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:
  • Adult literacy and/or experience tutoring adults in basic literacy/technology skills
  • Windows based operating systems and standard office software.
  • How to use laptops/Chromebooks, iPads, smart phones, and copiers/printers.

Ability to:
  • Learn about literacy software and the library's electronic resources.
  • Teach adults basic technology skills.
  • Work independently and prioritize work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Troubleshoot routine technology problems and recognize and report complex problems to literacy staff.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Interact courteously with learners, tutors and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Work effectively in a team-based environment to achieve common goals.
