What You'll Be Doing

Join our dynamic team at the forefront of environmental innovation with Wake County's Solid Waste Management Division! As the Facilities Manager for the East Wake Transfer Station and the South Wake Landfill, you'll lead a dedicated, eco-conscious team of contractors in managing these critical facilities. Our South Wake Landfill, a state and EPA showcase for cutting-edge waste management practices, processes close to 2,000 tons of Wake County’s trash daily from both private and municipal haulers. Known for its innovative solutions to waste and malodor management, it has hosted over 2,000 visitors for tours in the past five years. Meanwhile, the East Wake Transfer Station handles 1,400 tons per day. Additionally, we oversee 11 Convenience Centers, 3 Multi-Material Recycling Facilities, and 3 Household Hazardous Waste Facilities across Wake County.

This position will be involved in our work related to the South Wake Landfill and the East Wake Transfer. Work involves extensive knowledge of the solid waste field, state regulations as related to solid waste disposal, and contract administration. Employee works under the direction of the Solid Waste Program Manager (Landfills), oversees a variety of contract operations, and has daily contact with the public, requiring tact, courtesy and diplomacy. Works with the Wake County Communications and the Outreach/Education group within Solid Waste for promotion of managed facilities. Works with Recycling Operations group regarding appropriate recycling and disposal locations of waste from managed facilities.

NOTE: *This position requires up to 50% field work and has paid scheduled on-call work (up to 1 week per month)*

About Our Team

The Solid Waste Team is part of the Environmental Services Department for Wake County. We are a relatively small, tight-knit group of 17 full-time positions with a budget exceeding $30 million per year, primarily because our team focuses on contract management. We procure and manage the contracts for the operation of our various sites and run an active capital improvement program, typically building 3 to 4 projects annually with support from the Facilities Design & Construction Department. Most of our staff have been with the division for five or more years, with many serving for a decade or longer. It’s a fantastic group to work with, and we look forward to adding a new member to our dedicated team!

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Sciences, Engineering or related field
  • Three years of experience in solid waste management
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • SWANA Certification - MOLO (Manager of Landfill Operations) and or Transfer Station Operator
